Looking for ideas on having a Recon 1 Benchmade exclusive.

Which model would you choose and what would you change?

It has to be a current production knife (no 1990's return models) and the model has to have been on the market in it's regular form for at least a year...

Tell us what you think and we just may run with it!

My vote would be for a Griptilian 551 with Elmax blade and G-10 scales (don't really care about the color, but just for kicks let's say Earth Brown). The Elmax would be a nice upgrade from the regular 154CM, and I assume Benchmade would have no problem working with it since they've done quite a few knives in another B-U PM steel, M390. The G-10 scales would address what is probably the most common complaint about the regular Griptilian, the "hollow"/"plastic" feel of the Noryl GTX scales.

a g-10 barrage in orange! I'm happy with 154cm but i would like one of the newer super steels.

Mini Onslaught in CPM S90V. It would be a slicing MANIAC. Spyderco has been dealing with Carpenter a lot lately, so it's only fair that someone other than Spyderco should offer a knife in the famous CPM S90V. The model 746 will have been produced for a year by the time any deal with Crucible could be worked out. And some 3D machining on the G10 (ala ZT 0300) would be sweet.

Honestly, since BENCHMADE failed to do so I would suggest any one of the following...

BM 915 Triage in blue G-10 and full black blade and fittings. For those who protect.
BM 520 Presidio in tan aluminum and satin M390 steel. For those who serve.
BM 940 in grey bare aluminum and satin N680 steel. For those who are just plain cool.

Any thoughts on the MPR or LFTI?
The MPR is my favorite Benchmade, so I'd love a sprint run in that with a different G-10 color and super steel. I think good ol' black G-10 would actually be a nice change of pace from the green G-10 on the regular MPR, and for the steel my choice would be CPM-S90V or CTS-20CP, its Carpenter equivalent. If Benchmade doesn't have the grinders and so forth to work with S90V/20CP, Elmax would be my second choice. (Yes, freedoom, I'm starting to sound exactly like you with the Barrage. :D )

I wouldn't be as keen on the LFTI. I'm a huge titanium framelock fan, but unless the blade shape were changed (maybe going from a tanto to a Hinderer-style spanto would be a small enough change to be feasible?), I'd probably have to pass on that one.

+1 on the Bedlam - but with DLC coated M4

If a good tool steel or super steel is to be used, it needs to be heat treated properly. Some people have tested the hardness of the Benchmade M4 blades and found it to be on the very soft side of the spectrum (Gaucho @ 58Rc is horrible). I'd prefer it to be whatever Crucible has recommended. Some knives are way under the level of what I would consider being worth the cost. I will agree on the model, the Benchmade Bedlam is a beautiful knife, very worthy of it's own run. CPM-M4 steel is one of the toughest steels that Crucible makes (according to their website), it deserves to have a proper heat treat. 62.5-64RC would be ideal IMO. ;)

Griptilian with G10 in any high-end steel would be fantastic.

I love my Grips (3), but not a fan of the plastic handles. The overall size/shape and axis lock keep me coming back.
