Benchmade Fakes, knock-offs, counterfeits thread...

Just bought a 910 off the bay, I have some concerns. One, the knife ways 3.6 ounces versus the 3.9 advertised weight and weight of others I own. It’s also a hair slimmer (g-10 appears to be thinner scales). The finger groove is smaller than on other 910 models I own. I also notice the copyright R with circle around it is right on the line/grind. The serrations also look different. I know Benchmade made slight changes to lettering on the blade and serrations but I’m not sure about the rest. Knife came without a clip—the one pictured is a real one I added. Thoughts?

In the photos the model in question is the one on top.

I think both of these are legit with the bottom one being a slightly older model.

Hello fellow knife knuts. Non-active member here. First post/ longtime lurker!

I've been reading this thread at length lately as I've inherited a collection that includes some great Benchmades. Sadly, I've already learned that I have 2 Bali-Song copies, but they are surprisingly well built!

I could really use your validation help on two Benchmade Contegos.. Clones or No?

For starters, they feel really good in hand and are very high quality. Etched logos on blades are clear, italicized where called for and very legible. Both are heavy, with tight lockup and no blade play. Both super sharp and the machining marks appear correct. Pivots are T10 screws and coating/colors appear to match known good website photos. Expected paperwork and quality microfiber drawstring bag is in each box.

Reasons I think they could be clones:
1. Slide boxes are black (not blue) with small cell (not popcorn style) foam liners. They seem like a black version of the oldest blue slide boxes. Maybe they were sold when BM was in-between older style packages vs the new ones we know today with larger cell foam and slide on top lid?
2. No manufacture date on box end sticker for either model.
3. From the photo on 810SBK, I cannot see even the slightest dot for a trademark "circle-R" on right lower butterfly wing. It is visible on the satin blade 810 but very small/faint.

iCloud links to albums on both knives:

Your help is very appreciated!
They both look legit. We changed the packaging before these were discontinued so you just have the older packaging (pre 2014). We also didn't do the date codes back then.

Benchmade Benchmade Thank you very much for your quick response. I was really hoping to hear they weren't knock offs, so you've made my day!

Hi guys
Would you be able to advise if this is real or fake?
Concerns;
- Blade sits quite proud of scales when closed
- Micarta colour(?) & excess(?) resin (although does darken over time it does seem very dark/ almost black like a few clones ive seen)
- Box
Video that aroused my suspicions:

Thanks very much

Tough to say on this one without seeing it in person. The box you have there is definitely not what they shipped in. Looks like an old Benchmade box.

Decided to not go ahead with the it given the uncertainty. Again, appreciate the help :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Just wanted to get this knife checked. Everything looks good to me, but the only thing I noticed is that the vertical grind lines in the blade are barely visible, compared to my old ones which are very easy to see. Did Benchmade change the blade finish over time? First new generation Griptilian I've purchased. Bought secondhand, but they bought it from Blade HQ. Thanks!IMG_20250204_152115787.jpgIMG_20250204_152123862.jpgIMG_20250204_152143927_HDR.jpgIMG_20250204_152154572.jpg

everything looks legit to me. i believe that the grind line depth or finish can vary depending on the steel. the most extreme example i have is a 490 in s90v, if i run my thumbnail over the flat it feels like a washboard

My older versions in 154CM steel definitely had distinct grind lines. It is possible that was changed when they moved on to S30V (which I don’t possess). Maybe someone with a legit S30V version can chime in.

Looks legit. Yeah the grind lines and finishing have changed slightly over the years and different blade steels grind differently.

Awesome, great news! Thanks for your help everyone! Benchmade is the best!

Hey all, I’m posting this because I only really collect traditional slip joints, and don’t know anything about modern folders.

I took this in trade a couple of years ago because I was interested, but I never used it and just came across it again. It was “open but unused.”

I internally questioned the authenticity when I first made the trade, only because the person I traded with seemed to be offering it up to everyone who was looking to trade anything - traditional, modern, big, small, valuable, not valuable, etc. Came across a little desperate. I figured I’d take the chance though, but now I’d like to know what I have.

Thanks again for your thoughts!

Overall its looks mostly good. The micro fiber bag however does not seem legit. Strange. The knife appears to be real from the pics but the clip seems slightly off, almost like a blasted and DLC version. This one is tough to tell for sure from pics.

The logo and the bevel don't look even.
Thanks for the input! Are there other pics I could take that would be helpful to see?

I'm looking at the logo by the thumb stud. I won't swear it's a standard practice but I'd swear they tend to line up the etch pattern on a line depending on the blade.

This is a video that explains nicely real vs. fake. I learned from it.

The clip looks like the grey one from the 535GRY-1.

Yeah, I had to look hard, but I think it is ever so slightly askew of the line.
is the logo and s30v text etched or printed?
Not quite sure. I can’t feel an etch, if that is how I might tell.

Thanks for the vid. I’m starting to think maybe the handle seems good but the blade and clip are off. Is that a possibility?

Yeah, I agree with you and Benchmade Benchmade that it seems off from others I’ve looked at.
