hey, I recently lost my sturdy old griptilian, and was looking into buying another. Would you recommend the hole over the stud?

oh and do you have any other suggestions of knives i should give a try that are around the same pricepoint or below?

thanks!

Out of the griptilians, I'd say the 550HG seems a bit popular since it came out.

As for the same price point, there's a ton of stuff from Kershaw that is high quality and inexpensive. I'd say the recent Kershaw G-10 Tyrade is one of the best deals out.

Spyderco makes a few good ones for that price range as well. The Endura is a reliable lockback and has a VG-10 blade (similar to the 154CM of the griptilian).

I hope this helps, J.

On an AXIS lock knife I prefer a thumbstud. I also like the blade shape better of those models.

id get a hole, much more ergonomic IMHO also on the grip you can just do kindof an inside out ghetto wave(zip tie) so that way you have a thumbstud on the blade
get the hole

I prefer the thumbstud because I can flick it open with one. With the hole I need to stick my thumb in it and rotate open.

I find it exceedingly easy to both flick open and open normally my 555HG. I prefer the hole over the thumbstud, as well.

550HG-never had a problem and prefer it because it seems less likely to snag on something in my pocket. It basically flips out on its own when you want it to so "deployment under stress" is a non-issue.

I prefer the thumbstud. To be honest though I don't think it really matters much on a knife as smooth as the griptilian. It opens easy enough with just a slight flick of the wrist.

I prefer the blade shape of the Grip with the stud, but I can't manipulate one to save my life. Get the hole.

I had the hole and didn't really like it. I say go with the thumb stud. Better looking all around IMO.

Personal choice from reading all the posts. I originally bought one with the hole, liked the looks of the stud, bought one with a stud, missed the one with the hole, went back to the one with the hole and sold the one with the stud. Then got the 14210.

In my opinion the hole allows for a more positive opening using your thumb. My preference is a marble shoot opening. Rather then pushing through the whole range of motion with your thumb you your thumb while it's in the hole, adding some wrist rotation to further facilitate the opening.
