Hey, I know Benchmade makes great knives! Truly! So far, they haven’t won my heart. This is not a fault finding post, honest! Groove on Benchmade fans. 👍😇

Early in 2023 I went a little goofy buying budget knives. I kept 3 Kershaw Leeks, gave 2 away and started returning any knives that didn’t ring my bell. I test drove about a dozen budget knives. I also kept 2 CJRB knives. A new version Pyrite and an Ekko. I decided to stop buying budget knives and get willing to pay more to get more. I bought a CF Benchmade Bugout in s90v and a cf 940 also in s90v. I cycled them plenty and sliced paper just fine yet…………..I didn’t get that “love it” feeling. I didn’t like the “gritty” feeling one gets when slowly returning the blade and feeling the lock as it slides out of the blade. Granted, this is weird inspection criteria but the way the lock engages and disengages when locked just did not feel slick with either the Bugout or the 940. So back they went. My next purchase was a CRK small Sebenza in Magnacut with Ebony inlays. The bell started ringing. Since then, I’ve picked up WE knifes, more than one Spyderco and a Pro-Tech Malibu. All of these fit my personal better so far.

You're probably not alone on this one, I myself just seemed to lose interest in Benchmades. Don't particularly remember anything I didn't like about them but the appeal they once had was lost on me. So I gifted one to my daughter and bought my father a Benchmade Griptilian, but the only Benchmade in my lineup is the SOCP. It's small and simple while made nimbly. I've owned a fixed blade Adamas which I crafted scales for and gifted to a friend. I may buy a Benchmade again but it may not happen with there being so many other companies to try out. I still don't own a Carothers knife or an Arno Bernard, great looking knives but offered in an older steel. Because I'm steel biased, I've been eyeing Russian knives because some offer different steels which I'm really wanting to try out. Benchmade has just taken a back seat in my collecting preference. I'm currently going through this rarity kick, you could say it has overtaken my usual bias which is steel type. Who doesn't like trying rare or new steel?? Spyderco knows there's a market for this type of person and caters to it well in my opinion.

Aesthetically, I prefer BM over Spydie when talking about middle-market production folders. Not sure why someone would shred a bunch of paper with either, but everyone uses his knives in his own way.

These days, in that market I am liking Chinese makers like Kizer, We, TwoSun, etc. Their tolerances are really tight. And they use Ti and M390, 20CV, etc.at very reasonable prices.

Good luck in your journey.

Confirmation Bias is a great topic.
Adding Benchmade to the title will bring all the boys to the yard.

Congratulations this thread will surely break new ground and change opinions.
Hi Spill, Just sharing an opinion that I seldom hear. I’ll remember about sharing my bias, 😂👍😉🌴

Sure it is, they were perfect. No marring and no sharpening.

If I had a dollar for every person who sells a knife saying it's LNIB - and it wasn't - well, I'd have a lot more money for knives.

If you have taken it out of the box, opened it more than twice (and that is being generous), and cut ANYTHING with it - it is NOT perfect (as in "LNIB").

Try searching.

We have threads like this about once a week, adding little-to-no-value at best, and causing a shit-storm of fan-boy responses and arguments resulting in thread closures and warnings at the worst.

I think some of our new members just like to hear themselves talk.....

This is a little extreme. Most retailers have 30 day return policies. You think people aren’t fidgeting and testing the blade in paper during those 30 days? You think retailers aren’t reselling the knives they get back as “new”?

This is a little extreme.

Hardly.

I don't want a knife that has someone else's greasy fingerprints on it, or lubed, or cut anything if they are advertising it as "perfect" or "new" or "LNIB". And I won't even put "sharpened" in the same sentence as "LNIB".

If you have played with a knife, don't try to sell it as like-new.

Some will agree with me, some won't. It doesn't matter, except to me. Used is used - new is new. Simple.

I’m not talking about selling on the forum. I’m talking about buying new and returning it to the retailer for a full refund. If you think those knives aren’t being resold as brand new you’re crazy.

Well this sure got off track. I’ll close with this. i simply returned a couple knives that I didn’t like to the original retailer in perfect condition with all packing. I was careful as I alway am before I decide to keep or return a knife. Those who have never chosen to return a knife may not understand. My returns were within 2 days of receipt and the Benchmades got returned day of receipt. So let’s all just settle down bit.

I think Benchmade makes some of the best designs out there, but their QC department has been slacking for years. Things like protruding screws, asymmetrical grinds. To be fair, Ive only owned 3 Benchmades; one 940-1 & two Griptilians. All of them had blade play issues. On my 940, both springs broke in short succession not long after I got it. I reached out to Benchmade & they were kind enough to send new springs along with a new pivot assembly, which fixed the issues. Still have that 940 and a 555-1. The 940 is still one of my favorites to this day. After they released the Anthem they should've just permanently switched to a coil spring for their axis locks, instead of those dodgy omega sprigs.
