Hey, I know Benchmade makes great knives! Truly! So far, they haven’t won my heart. This is not a fault finding post, honest! Groove on Benchmade fans. 👍😇

Early in 2023 I went a little goofy buying budget knives. I kept 3 Kershaw Leeks, gave 2 away and started returning any knives that didn’t ring my bell. I test drove about a dozen budget knives. I also kept 2 CJRB knives. A new version Pyrite and an Ekko. I decided to stop buying budget knives and get willing to pay more to get more. I bought a CF Benchmade Bugout in s90v and a cf 940 also in s90v. I cycled them plenty and sliced paper just fine yet…………..I didn’t get that “love it” feeling. I didn’t like the “gritty” feeling one gets when slowly returning the blade and feeling the lock as it slides out of the blade. Granted, this is weird inspection criteria but the way the lock engages and disengages when locked just did not feel slick with either the Bugout or the 940. So back they went. My next purchase was a CRK small Sebenza in Magnacut with Ebony inlays. The bell started ringing. Since then, I’ve picked up WE knifes, more than one Spyderco and a Pro-Tech Malibu. All of these fit my personal better so far.

I’m talking about buying new and returning it to the retailer for a full refund. If you think those knives aren’t being resold as brand new you’re crazy.
That's the problem. The retailer doesn't care. The second buyer gets the shaft. I would not want to buy a "new" knife that has been "cycled like a mad man" and used to "shred plenty of paper."

Hardly.

I don't want a knife that has someone else's greasy fingerprints on it, or lubed, or cut anything if they are advertising it as "perfect" or "new" or "LNIB". And I won't even put "sharpened" in the same sentence as "LNIB".

If you have played with a knife, don't try to sell it as like-new.

Some will agree with me, some won't. It doesn't matter, except to me. Used is used - new is new. Simple.
Please re-read the post. I carefully did a couple returns like many of us do if we’re not happy with a purchase for any reason. I didn’t offer anything for sale.

OK Dog Star. I was exaggerating regarding my unpacking and checking out the Benchmades. How about “I put them through reasonable paces” prior to carefully reboxing and returning them? 😊😉🌴

Brands with (for me) high prices that mostly have strict price controls , have more than enough profit built in to cover returns , IMO .

I never pay MAP , so I would not feel right to return a used knife unless seriously flawed / defective .

I believe most defects can be detected without using the knife to cut .

But I have broken overly brittle blades, with bad HT, that looked great and worked fine otherwise . Some defects are only revealed with use .

Good for you man. Never liked Benchmade and sold my Spyderco as I never liked it that much either. This doesn't make either Benchmade or Spyderco bad knives. Everyone has tastes and preferences. Mine are Izula are Recon1.

We are lucky to have variety to choose.

The one thing custom makers usually do better then large scale production are the grinds, more specially thinner grinds. Also of cause a bespoke handle/grip on a fixed is always gonna be better.
