benchmade kind of letting me down

benchmade's clips are total garbage . . . the clips stick far out from the knife and hit everything, they have no retention at all

This is demonstrably false. Its quite possible that you had a less than stellar experience with a Benchmade, because any knife maker can let you down, but your claim that Benchmade clips have no retention is just not supported by the facts. If what you said were true, we would see dozens or hundreds of other posters saying the same thing, and we just don't.

In related news I love my Mini Griptilian 556, but when I first got it about 2 years ago, it was incredibly dull right out of the box. This is problematic for someone who does not own a good knife sharpener.

Both my Adamas and Emerson CQC13 have this problem of the 40ish folders I have (7 benchmades, + 3 i'ves sold that didn't have that problem). Neither bother me enough to try and bend them back.

i have owned and carried 2 griptilian's, 1 mini grip, 1 710 mchenry & williams, 1 940 osbourne, 1 527 mini persideo ultra, and 1 5000sbk auto persideo.

i should not have stated my last post as a "FACT". but in my personal experience i have had all of those clips work out of my pocket if I...... recline in a lazyboy, drive in my truck for a long period of time, take a nap with it in my jeans, work under a car, jog or run for a short time or grab for something else in my right pocket like my keys, headphones chapstick etc.... i will find the knife worked out of my pocket about to fall out or it will be in my chair, bed or shop floor etc.... and all of my other gripes are based on personal experience

(I SAID I WILL MAKE A VDEO ON THE SUBJECT SO I WILL POST IT ON THIS THRED OR START A NEW ONE. IT WILL NEED TO WAIT UNTILL AT LEAST 3 PM EAST STD. TIME TOMORROW!)

I've never really seen clip tightness as a big issue. Some people prefer it one way or the other, so if you don't like it just bend it till it's tight (or loose) enough for you.

Frankly no, your ~$150 doesn't go so far as to have no issues whatsoever. There's a reason why people spend $400+ on CRKs. And even those knives aren't perfect.

Let's not forget: these are production knives, not customs. They can't please everyone.

Just because you perceive it and catagorize it as a problem, doesn't make it so. In fact, I would bet many consider that nit-picking (just my opinion though). Part of the problem is that some people have unreal expectations over mass produced items. Nothing is "perfect", even customs have issues at times. If the blade rolls when cutting through cardboard, or the lock slips, then that is a problem that would be unacceptable.

As RevDevil said, nothing is perfect. I once bought a new in the box Spyderco Millie and its liner lock wasn't properly adjusted with enough tension. It didn't lockup tight at all and you could hear the blade rattle while open when you shook the knife. I disassembled it, bent the liner over a bit and presto, perfect lockup and tension. Nothing is perfect. Don't expect perfection and you wont be let down. The my 2cents.

Yeah, unacceptable on a $5 knife, I would think the point of spending over a hundred bucks on a knife would be to reduce the complaints to 'nit-picking'. Too many brands are given too much leeway, imo. The materials don't cost that much, no matter the steel or the handle, all the cost comes from labor, so a higher price ought to mean better execution.

I often adjust my clips to match the thickness of the cloth to which the knife is attached. If I have the clip off the knife for "in" bending, I check the underside of the clip for drag burrs. If I find burrs, I smooth them with a diamond file.

My Griptillian clip was crooked and only touching on one side so straightened with a pair of pliers

I'm not understanding how this is a let down. In my view this is really a non-issue, it only takes a minute to bend them tighter or looser.

Agreed. I also don't why so many people care so much about how sharp new knives are out of the box. Sure it's nice when they come razor sharp, but if it's not, WHO CARES!? You're going to have to sharpen it eventually anyway. It's like buying a car and whining that it only comes with 7/8ths of a tank of gas.

true but it should also be mentioned that benchmade's clips are total garbage. the screws are not hardend for the clips and the torx teeth damage easy, the clips stick far out from the knife and hit everything, they have no retention at all, and most have a cheep paint on them, and the split arrow clip dig's into your finger while removing the knife

if the benchmade people did research and gave a shit they would realize how few people are satisfied with the standard clip. heck all they need to do is edc one for a few months

I completely forgot to mention that after removing the cilp from my rift bending it anf putting it back onone of the torx screw heads did strip one luckly it was tight but not what i would consider tight.

I am a knife maker my self and do not see it that way i would never sell or even give away a knife with a clip like the triage or rift that i got yes it is nit picky but for 130$ that only cost them maybe 40$ to make should be looked it just a little longer sorry my opinion.

And yet again i am in no way saying that these knives are not amazing because they are and more so for me to be nit picky because the rest of the kinfe is amazing, so why not take a look at the clip a little more benchmade?

Quoted for posterity.

Just take the clip off, bend it towards the handle and put it back on.

Already did but my argument is i should not have to when they are making a 300% profit off of there products.

As a knife maker i have to disagree again and bad analogy because i do expect any car that i buy to have a full tank that is just good practice and if a company dosent do it i wont buy from them because what else are they skimping you on.?

300% profit? How did you come to this figure?

Because i have bought all of these materials in smaller portions which would make the more expensive off the bat and still could probably get the materials to make a rift or a triage for cheaper then 40$ which would actually make it a 400% profit off of the msrp price for materials only.

And like you said it is a production knife so there i very little labor into making these knives just mainly up keep on the machines and an inspector

So for 5$ i can get a 154cm peice of steel that is .116 " thick 1 1/2" wide and 5" long which would more then compensate for the lock and pivot portion of the blade go to alpha knife supply. And that would give extra steel also. For 4.20 $ i can get two peices of 1/8" thick by 1 1/2" wide by 5" long black g10. We are up to 9.20 $ so far that leaves 30.80$ for 1/16" thick 420j stainless steel which would be cheaper then the g10 and the rest for pocket clip and hardware come on and they maximize material use with waterjetting and recycling with the steel company. They are in all actuallity making like a 720% profit if you break it down to the size and that is still being genrous. Some of that money should go to QA. No?

These are all materials to make a rift and i worked the percentages out for 180 msrp but it is actually 190msrp. It just keeps getting better.
