Benchmade knives

If you like Benchmade, then stick with them. No point getting any knife other than the one you want-I've found that "almost the same" is not quite good enough. Save up if need be.

On the Axis vs ball lock thing, I probably shouldn't join in, but after trying out the Axis on the HK14205 (IIRC) and BM530, as well as the ball lock on the Poliwog and P'kal, I'd give the Axis the nod when it comes to ease of unlocking, but I'd trust the ball lock more...plus it looks cooler. :D (I M H O ) Both are VERY smooth, and in all the designs I felt that the lock was very well done.

(That Poliwog is really awesome, and the 530 too)

Since I bought a mini grip for 55-60 bucks back in 2007 - I would say a price increase is long over due. Costs are up folks everything lately costs a little more than it did. I just paid 60 bucks for a plastic handled spyderco that didn't even have liners, and it had a lockback. If I hadn't bought it on ebay, add 10 bucks. The price is not horribly out of line trust me.

They raised their prices for the new year! That sucks!!!! Now I can't find a full size griptilian for under $89. I should have ordered one when it was $69 just before Jan 1. Oh well.

I was thinking of ordering one but now, No way! I'm not giving Benchmade my business. But I am still in the market for a good folder. Just not sure were to go as the griptillian has been on my (I should order one) list for some time. Now I must look elsewhere to scratch that itch. So, other then waiting for a year for RAT and Bark River to release their folder's, what else should I be looking at?

I'm looking for a folder to take with me in the woods for bush craft. Anywhere in the entire continental united states, even wet climates and rainforest (I'm going to trek the rain forest of Maui in a month or two)

Looking for something fun and tacticool. Lets say $210 is maximum and it should cost at least $60.

I'll mention the Kershaw Tyrade as a starting a reference point (I wish the blade shaped appealed to me more)

So what do what you guys recommend? What cool design have you been eyeing to take into the woods?

wow they raised the price by $20????

Noticed Your Corner Store doesn't carry BM. I thought they used to. I think BM has good products, but don't have any interest in a $80+ Minigrip. Maybe it's just me, but at some point, a knife just cuts stuff. A fellow I knows makes fun of people paying more than his $2.00 Barlow. If it's over $50 for a knife, I get real real cautious. The minigrips I have are slightly more. At some point, you must ask how much better is a minigrip than a Wal Mart Native at $39, no longer available I know. Or how much than a $24 US Made Buck Vantage.

If the higher BM prices bother you, it is a good time to take a look at Spyderco, Buck and others. Frankly, I'll be suprised if all knife prices don't escalate given the current administration's printing of dollars.

Just got the BM745 I ordered last week, paid $87.50 for it. This thread got me wondering so I went and checked the site I ordered from. Yep, still $87.50. The deals are still there to be found; we'll have to wait a few months to see how it plays out but, as of now, it seems to me like this isn't as big a deal as everyone thought it would be.

It is an opinion based on actually owning and using several models of both brands, which I doubt you have.

 Why would you think that? I have owned dozens of different knives by both Spyderco and Benchmade.

I am also sure you do not know what a Caged Ball Lock is, well it is a better Axis Lock, with less wear, no side play of the Axis bar and smoother action.
And it was designed in-house, contrary to the Axis.

The caged ball as found on the Manix II? Yes, I have heard of it, although I haven't tried one. However, I can see that it would be an improvement over the ball lock that was on my D'Allara Drop Point. I found that very difficult to disengage when wearing firefighting gloves, so sold it.
I would consider a Manix II, but I generally prefer thumb studs to opening holes (of any shape) and I have spent quite a lot on knives recently, with the recent arrival of my CPM M4 Rift - and an M4 Mini RSK Mk1, CPM M4 Military and Hinderer XM18 on order.

DrivebyTrucker is mad because the cost of his favorite knives went up this year. He even threatens to never by another Benchmade because of this. Buddy, if you stop buying anything that gets more expensive over time, I'm worried that you are going to be cowering in a grass hut in a few years, with no posessions at all (or food, for that matter. It isn't getting cheaper.)

Do yourself a favor; find the knife you like the best, buy it, and be happy.

Well Said, I agree 100%...

I avoided Benchmades for years because they were a little more expensive than Spydercos and Kershaws. Then I nabbed a grip to see what the fuss was about and found out the fuss was about a superior knife. With Benchmade you defiantly get what you pay for. I'd stack my EDC 630BK against any thing on the market, and with the new knives 2010 it looks like Benchmade is still working hard to put out high quality products.

Did'nt this happen last year?

You sure because the store over here sells full sized griptillians for $73 dollars.

What store in California? I just handled one today at an REI. There $85 there which is now more or less competitive with the online stores (if you don't include the coupon code). It's a fine knife. I have a feeling we'll see more Benchmade knives sold in brick and mortar stores in the coming years. Also their doing away with their Red line and moving all production back to USA. Just as Buck has been doing. That's a good move on their part and makes their knives seem more attractive.

Knifecenter has them for 99 bucks BUT I've never ordered from them before so maybe do a bit of research on them.

I placed my 3rd order to Knife Center yesterday because I was so happy with the service on my 1st & 2nd orders. They are REALLY quick to get the order sent - I get stuff from them to me within a week, which is really good for overseas shipments. They are probably not the best to have ever existed or anything - but they are good to deal with and I am a happy customer. Knife Centre and New Graham Knives are the first 2 choices for me for online orders.

Couldn't have said it any better (well, I could have, but I'm being sarcastic right now)! Benchmade customers do seem like a rather rebellious bunch as of late.:p
