Benchmade Lifesharp.... disappointed.

Well I bought a Benchmade 940 earlier this year and while using it at work I ended up up rounding the tip when it dropped on the ground. Then when I tried to fixing the tip with a sharpmaker, I ended up making it even worse so I decided to send the knife in to Lifesharp at Benchmade and pay the $30 to replace the satin blade with a brand new one....

OK now one month later I get the knife back. Opened the box and the knife looked beautiful. All the screws and pivot had been replaced and the scales looked cleaned.

Then, sadly, once I opened the knife, the brand new blade it was supposed to be replaced with is laughable... the grind is bad. Really uneven towards the tip.

I guess I'm going to email Benchmade about this. They'll probably make it right, but it really ticks me off because now I'll probably have to wait another month to get it back again.

Has anyone else had experiences like this? Am I just being anal about this? I've had many knives and I've never seen the tip look like this.

Welcome to the club. I have 8 BM's and I'm not buying anymore. The Anthem was my last. Quality was great on mine, the other three in store had off center blades or bad grinds. What's BM's problem? Fix the shoddy work guys. People, right or wrong, are sure talking about it.

It's well known issue for most manufacturers but specifically Benchmade is really bad with Edges. It can't be helped. Iirc they now use a work sharp blade grind attachment to sharpen knives when they come in for service to be sharpened. And i have noticed those aren't as bad as often.

They don't care about enthusiasts. If it's sharp that's all that matters.

I agree with that. I'm sending the knife back. Still haven't gotten a response but I know they will because this is my 4th run with Lifesharp.

I don't want to come off as a jerk but I'm going to write that I want a new blade with a full, even grind from start to finish and be as symmetrical as possible.... Not a regrind of the one that's on it. I paid $30 for a new blade so I think I deserve something with those specifications at least.

Better to send it to a guy who does professional knife sharpening as a career. I got lucky and found a guy who does japanese whetstone sharpening in my city. He always does an amazing job and I usually have my knife back in a week.

I don’t know if you can find one in your city but maybe you could ask the sushi chef where he gets his knives done next time you’re out for Japanese food? I would definitely give him a crappy knife to try first to test out his work.

Wait...what! BM offers new blades for 30$ I might have to send my contego in for a new one, not that there's anything wrong with it. It sit in my case now as I have replaced it with the adamas but after 18 months of EDC, it shows some wear and a few tiny rust spots where the engraving was

Yep. Any satin blade for $30 and DLC coated blade for $40

Just hope they get the grind right on your new contego blade

Not worried about the grind, first thing I do is put my edge on it, can't stand factory grinds of any kind

I see you have discovered Benchmade's propensity for "Left Beef"

Nearly all of the Benchmades I've purchased over the last several years have had a left-side bias on their edges. Benchmade even acknowledged it on this forum about a year ago and said they would look into it. Here's my Adamas from last year: FullSizeRender_1.jpg

Got my Hinderer xm-18 in the mail today. Something tells me they wouldn't send a blade out like the Benchmade 940 I got

Any knife you buy is going to have complaints. Hinderer's have been criticized for other reasons in the past. Being dull out of the box, not flipping well, detent. I didn't let those things stop me from purchasing one though. The dealer I bought from recommended the best one for flipping without me asking. I mentioned buying another color XM and he directed me towards the one that I ended up buying.

CRK is known for their fit and finish but they've had issues as well. I'm not excusing Benchmade I think things could be tightened up a bit. They put out more knives than Hinderer and CRK combined I imagine so there is more probability that they may send out more knives with issues.

With that being said Benchmade replaces blades for $30.00. I'm not sure what Hinderer charges but CRK will hit you for $150 the last time I checked. Spyderco doesn't replace any blades. ZT has similar pricing to Benchmade.
