I see a lot of love for Spyderco, and no doubt the CRK's and etc. But little do I see love for Benchmade, personally I own alot of knives, alot of both Spydies and BM's and the Benchmade is the clear cut winner in quality and general overall IMO. I love my Spydies as well but most come with basic handles or when they do use G10 it is very flat and not much effort into depth. Is it because Benchmade's are usually more money, or maybe Spydies are great for their prices.
I personally never found a heavy use Spydie ( not that I have them all, I do have the Gayle Bradley ), but feel as they can't take the beatings I put on my Benchmades, Red,Blue and the intentional Black class.
And comparing the Gayle Bradley vs Contegofor example, no doubt GB is beautiful, so is Contego in a more tactical way. Both hve M4 steel, Contego holds a better edge and is coated for extra rust resistance. GB liner but more of a frame lock is strong but designed like crap, Contego has axis enough said. GB has little gimping while Contego has to much ( I actually removed some ). Both scales with last forever, but Contego has bigger bushing and opens drastically easier.

I'm not doubting there is no love for Benchmade, but as a guy for favors them over typical production knives I just thought I would get some opinions why you like Sypdies or another production brand better if you do.

Also tell me IYO what Spydie is the best heavy use knife. I have yet to see one, The best three IMO are the Gayle Bradley, Mega Manix and (Military but not really heavy use). Please dont waste a post with any thin bladed, no liner knife

Thanks

I haven't seen anything coming out of Benchmade that really interests me. I've got a Marlowe balisong, the 710 in 154CM and a Ritter Grip. I've had numerous others, and would like to see a "sprint" run of the Skirmish and Rukus.

I feel the same way you do and I have a theory. Spyderco seems to make many slicing blades. Benchmade makes what I consider a stronger, but maybe a less slicing knife. I have over a dozen NIB BM's I haven't even got to yet, but I have only owned one spyderco, over fifteen years ago. I am going to pick up a para military 2 soon though.

Most of my knives are BM's.
So, I am a huge BM fan.
If you're looking for BM love, go the BMF.

OK! But regarding the O.P. do you know of a heavy use Spydie, or do you favor otherbrand besides benchmade soley on looks. Which is cool, to each is own. I personally think most Spydies look very much the same.

I agree with you for the most part. I discovered Spyderco many years ago but when I discovered BM they became my favorites. Well fast forward to modern times and my most expensive EDC knife is actually a sprint run Spyderco.

I think there is less discussion here for BM knives because there is no BM-specific forum.

I have read that Spyderco knives were designed for function without regards to looks and that might be the reason that they don't sculpt the G10 on some of their handles. I like my older BM's and I have found several of their new models that I like and I'm searching for good deals on them. I also like my new blue Paramilitary 2. I'm swayed by the more elegant design of the Benchmades but only time will tell which ones I end up liking the most.

I feel more confident with the Axis lock than any other lock I've seen.

The only times I ever had a lock fail, it was a liner lock. Mainly because the lock can be disengaged by the way you grip the knife.

I personally only carry BM.

The Barrage and Grip families.

OH no Im not really looking for BM love, I was just curious why on a Blade forum not much talk about them

There is plenty of Benchmade talk here! You joined 6 days ago! Get a little more time in before jumping to conclusions!

Welcome...by the way.

BM's Axis lock, in my experience, is one of the few locks on the market that self-adjust for long-term wear. To boot, it's stronger than it needs to be.

BM lost me until the Bone Collector series came out. G10, D2, the Axis, and the Spydie hole in one package is what I'd wanted for years.

Lots of BM love here.

I hear BM get talked about all the time on here........

I seem to remember this other guy who was only here a couple days and opened a bunch of threads that jumped to incorrect conclusions about BF...who was that guy?....

:)

Just messin' with you! :D

I think ZT takes the cake for heavy use. Sorry Spyderco and Benchmade :p

I personlly dont like that many ZT'z, and overall heavy use winner would be Hinderer knives, it just depends on wht you are willing to spend. I'm more talking the average joe brands production stuff. I have nothing against any KAI knife, I have a few.

Aquaman, I also carry a Barrage ( 581 ) any my normal use knife. Best overall value of any knife I ever picked up. I always carry a heavy use also, but I like to change it up a little

i consider BM love to be on the rise currently or at least at a high point. there was a time not very long ago when there was a lot of BM bashing going on. mostly regarding the factory edges but that seems to have been addressed and for a while there were a lot of reported "axis failures" and spring problems. that seems to have fallen off as well. i've been a fan of benchmade for a long time. some of their recent designed haven't appealed to me but i just got a sprint run of the ares in m390 steel. this knife reaffirmed to me that BM still makes them as good as anybody out there

Because many Benchmade models, 941, mini grip, etc, feel rather toyish and cheap in comparison to the comparable Spyderco models

Something about Benchmade "to me" just screams PLAIN AND BORING. If you've seen one or two Benchmades, you've seen them all.
