I have had so much help on my folding EDC questions, I am know looking at a fixed blade knife to attach to my pack.

I like both the Nimvarus and some of the ESEE models (never heard of them till I joined this forum) Any thoughts on these knives. Looking for an all around survival / hiking / camping / BOB knife.

One more question. I want to by my son (military) a knife to attach to his gear. Fixed blade any suggestions?

Thanks as always,

Dale

Ok well i'm a bit of a Benchmade fanboy but when it comes to fixed blades, from what i'v used, ESEE is totally the way to go :D

Buy both. They have different used. Benchmade is more tactical and ESSE is more of a camper.

If you're like something that's a cross between the two (outdoor / tactical), take a look at the Zero Tolerance 0100 / 0160 / 0170 / 0160 fixed blades.

Wow tough choice. I say ESEE 4 for you and your son. Check out the clip point versions very nice.

ESEE-4 or the ESEE-3MIL for sure. I can't stand the ergonomics of the Nimravus.

They'll work, but they are much bigger than the 4 or the Nimravus.

Tanto Nimravus on the top, the big black one is a 0170. The 0100 should be about the same size, and the 0160 should be a tad smaller, but still bigger than the Nimravus.

I just received today, the ESEE folder. Wow, it is something different. Massive....strong... is how I would describe it. Razor sharp and very nice build quality.

It's a HEST.....not sure about the "f". I have been looking it over very carefully. I don't see any issues described in this thread. I suppose it is a later production model and bugs are worked out.

I tried using a Nimravus for general utility and found the handle very uncomfortable during heavy cutting. Get something with a round handle.

Allright guys thanks for all the replies, I am going with an ESEE whats the difference between the 3 and the 3mil (military)? And any of you Military guys out there, what length would you recommend for my son?

ESEE four. Either clip point or regular, I am kinda digging the clip point after researching them. Having said that being in the military he may like the drop/regular tip for it's increased strength.

Not to nit-pick, but the HEST folder has nothing to do with ESEE. They only produced the fixed blade, which they've discontinued.

ESEE-3:
Linen Micarta (or Orange G10 if you go for the OD blade instead of black) Handles
Regular Pommel

ESEE-3MIL:
Canvas Micarta Handles
Sharpened Glass-breaker Pommel

Both available with the clip point. Price difference is negligible between the different models.

You can get the regular 3 in canvas, too. The main difference is that the MIL comes with a glass-breaker pommel, ONLY available with canvas micarta scales, and comes with ALL of the different mounting hardware options. :)

Hi,

For your son, a nice knife would be... Nimravus, serrated Or Esee3mil serrated or Esee4 serrated.
I dont think he'd need a big blade, serrations are perfect to go through in many kind of stuff in a hurry.
A nice present would also be a multi-tool leatherman wave fits me perfectly, but if he's kinda boomer (does he manipulate C4?), a MUT, if he hasn't got one yet, would be your best choice, indeed

For you, as a heavy duty-comfortable-reliable knife I'd suggest more an Esee4, or Esee6, both plein edge, which I find easier to control and make nice cuts with the base of the blade, in outdoor, it's greatly appreciated.
A nimravus should fill all your needs in the woods, but I think, as a really nice piece of cutlery, you'd have some pain to use it the rough way.

IIRC Ranger school limits blade size during training to 4". Besides when I deployed I was always issued a bayonet :) Frankly I'd go w/ either the 3"-4" ESEE if you're looking for a coated blade. For a non coated blade I'd look at the BRKT Bravo-1 (4") or Gunny (3").
