Benchmade Nimravus vs ESEE

For your son, a nice knife would be... Nimravus, serrated Or Esee3mil serrated or Esee4 serrated.
I dont think he'd need a big blade, serrations are perfect to go through in many kind of stuff in a hurry.

Not gonna find too much love for serrations around here I bet. I have a Nimravus, old version with the handle protruding. It's a nice knife, but not that great for camping. It can be fixed, but I'd probably go ESEE, Becker, or RatManDu or something.

I have the ESEE-4 and -6, and they are extremely well-designed, high quality knives with an unbeatable warranty for a very reasonable price. On top of that, their sheaths are terrific, and the ESEE-4 is very concealable--even pocketable. That said, I'd only get one if you like a choil on your knife. I recommend against the clip point which compromises utility. Be aware that they're 1095 and, so, require some minor care.

A word of warning: I made the mistake of getting a RAT-3, because it was shorter and cheaper than the ESEE-3--BOY, WHAT A MISTAKE! They don't even compare. For the uses you specified, I'd definitely go with the ESEE-4 over the -3 for chopping (wrap the lanyard around the back of your hand and over your thumb) and general utility.

Another vote for the ESEE 3 or 4. A swamp rat RMD would do nicely well. I have a pair of Nimravus and the ergo's are not the best for general use.

Buy both. They have different used. Benchmade is more tactical and ESSE is more of a camper.

If I were still in uniform I would be carrying an ESEE-3mil. (and probably an Izula if wearing BDU's) no question about it.

Though I believe they would both have to be in aftermarket Kydex, that drives up the overall cost and time.

If your looking for an all around hiking/camping/outdoor knife, go with the ESEE 4,5,or 6. The nimravus is a really good knife, but it's designed primarily as a combat/fighter. It can work as an outdoor knife but the ESEE will work much better.
