Benchmade or Spyderco; can't decide.

I've been lurking here on the forums lately. This will be my first nice knife in a long time. I recently purchased a Henckle chefs knife to replace the one I tried to hack apart frozen beef bones for my dogs (not a good idea). I guess I'm inspired to finally get myself a nice EDC to replace my bulky Wallyworld Winchester folder.

I'm torn between the Spyderco Centofante 3 or the Benchmade 745 Lum Mini.

I'm looking for a utility knife for light duty use that can be my EDC. Any opinions / reviews / insights are appreciated. Oh yeah, and will I be able to open a can in an X style if I had too? Is the s30v / vg10 steel that hard?

Peace,
Kirk

Welcome to the forums:). Both of those knives are very nice designs. You really can't lose either way. I think I might be a little more confident stabbing into a can with the Centofante though.

Thanks. Is that because the knife tip is thicker on the Centofante? I'm going to my local knife shop tomorrow to actually hold these in my hand and examine close-up.

Price no object I'd get the Caly 3. The Paramilitary looks good also. Bang for Buck I'd go w/ a Delica.

i'd go with the Bob Lum, i have the full size and i love the crap out of it.
I'm leaning towards the Lum for the sheer simplicity of the design and the blade style. I'll be using it for slicing mostly. I also love the high clip placement. I don't want something sticking out of my jeans pocket. The Centofante has such knife making history behind the name. That's a big selling point to me as well.

Thicker tip, as in the angle that makes the point is more obtuse? Maybe, but the Centofante is Spyderco's thinnest blade. It's 2mm vs 2.5 on the Delica and 3-4 on everything else.

because he so mentioned all 3 of those...

he presented two options, and said that these two are the ones he has already decided between. if you want to recommend an alternative, thats fine but at least answer his question.

between your two choices, I would honestly go with the centofante even though I dislike spyderco. if you really dont care about the difference in cash, then yes, the bob lum is better, but its because its g10 with liners instead of frn which I dislike, and I personally like the design way better. benchmade has a few high value blades but none of them have s30v.

if you are torn, I have a simple solution. get a coin, heads is the centofante and tails is the bob lum and just go with whatever one the coin tells you too.

Ha-Ha! That made me laugh. I'll decide tomorrow when I show up at the knife store. I hope they have both there. I'm planning on walking out with one or the other. I am leaning towards the BM 745 Bob Lum Mini. I'll just have to hold both in my hand to be sure. Maybe one day I'll own both and have no need for a coin.

theres actually a fair bit of logic and reasoning behind the coin, but if I told you what that was, it would ruin the effect. but I will say that you will definately get your answer if you give it a shot.

also, make sure to check out the lock up on the lum, Ive heard they can be suspect but my personal disinterest in the knife has prevented me from checking it out myself, but Id like to hear if thats really an issue.

My wife got me the Mini Lum, and it is SWEET!
BUT, Spydies are cool too...
So get BOTH if you can!:)

But seriously, I can speak for the Lum as I have one, and I've yet to get the Spydie of which you speak.

The lum is a great knife. It has an excellant design, its very smooth, great ergos. I like it alot and it would be a great light duty EDC and a great all around slicer.

As for the stabbing cans part, I have never tried it with mine and I think that goes against the whole "light duty" part.

Spyderco makes good stuff but i love the handle/ergos and the overall knife design of the BM Lum over the Spyderco Cent. Just my opinion though.

I must be living in bizaro world, because I could have sworn he said he wanted a bob lum benchmade or a centofante spyderco.

no, he surely must have asked which kershaw to buy.
