Benchmade or Spyderco; can't decide.

Specifically -

Spyderco Stretch, CE
SC90PS

Okay. I found it. I neglected to ask what knife I was holding at the store. It just caught my eye and I asked to hold it. It's a Spyderco. I really like the way it felt and really like the skinny profile. It's the Spyderco Stretch. At New Grahams it goes for $103. My local shop has it for $89. What do you guys know about this knife? What do you all think about this knife versus the Lum in terms of quality?

I have one on order myself so I "think" it's a fine knife but I don't have it in hand yet. I ordered the carbon fiber model with ZDP-189 steel.

As soon as I get my Endura4 White FRN from gpknives.com, I'll let ya know how good they are :) They do have good prices though.

The 745 is 87.50 from NGK, just go with that, because it sounds like thats the one you really want.

Spyderco and Benchmade both make great knives. I prefer the opening hole and generally find Spydercos more comfortable in the hand, so I buy them more often.

If you want a good general use EDC I recommend the Caly 3 like others. The Centofante is a good knife that is very light and thin in the pocket. If it attracts your eye more I can fully recommend it as well. If you want something a little heavier but about the same size as the Centofante, the Stretch, Endura, Tenacious, Paramilitary and Byrd Flight are worth a look.

As far as cutting cans it's not much of an issue for most folders. I'd suggest tapping on the rear end of the knife to drive it through, this seems to cause less stress than jabbing at the can. Either way it will dull your knife some, so make sure you can sharpen them well before you do this. Might want to look into a Swiss Army Knife with a can opener ;)

The link in my signature has review for the knives I mentioned.

Update:

That Spyderco Stretch was on my mind so much, I went back to the shop and bought it. It wasn't $89 anymore. Maybe it was sitting on the wrong box before, I dunno. It's the plain edge, what I like. It's a limited edition, which is cool. It weighs an ounce more than the Winchester I've been lugging around, but feels lighter. I can't even feel it clipped in my front pocket. It has a very strong feel while unfolding. The fact I can put my initials or something on it is cool too. I won't say what I paid. I will say it was over $103. It really doesn't matter. I went in looking for the Lum and the Centofante, and the Stretch just seemed to be calling me by name; like it was waiting for me to pick it up and take it home. Does that sound cheesy?

Thanks for all the help everyone! Between ordering the mini Lum online and the Stretch, I even flipped a coin (okay it was a pepper packet, same idea) and found myself hoping it landed on the Stretch side. It did anyway.
;)

Im glad Im just so awesome, and Im glad youre happy. But be sure to get a lum in the future.

the logic and reasoning being that coin tosses by human hands are for all intents and purposes random and unpredictable since we can never know all initial conditions in a real life coin toss conducted in an uncontrolled multivariate environment? yes, it's all mechanical, but there's no way the human mind could predict or determine the outcome of a coin toss because there are way too many factors interacting in human tossing a coin...we could never calculate the ultimate bias and thus predict the outcome. :) so the only answer he'll get with a coin toss is a for all intents and purposes (even if not technically) a random one, whether or not if he picks a face to toss up on.

Ha,ha,ha,ha,ha, good one!!!,I couldnt have put it better myself:)

yeah, i thought i was being clever. I had been arguing with a colleague about the Diaconis coin-tossing experiment but apparently p_mcmanis was talking about something completely different and simpler. So naturally, the human response is to get insulted and want to fight and expand one's ego before taking a step back and looking at what was written. I had meant the message sarcastically and playfully, but it wasn't taken that way. I thought his response, even though misdirected, was genius and made me laugh. It really was quite ownage, and for that I give you credit p_mcmanis; it was indeed pretty awesome. I don't like to get into flame wars with people...everyone's bolder over an internet connection. So, p_mcmanis, i'm sorry if i came across as pretentious, it was not my intention. I thought i was being funny, but obviously it doesn't communicate well on a computer screen. I shall refrain in the future.

to be fair I did specifically mention there was a trick behind it. also, yes, its hard to know if you are being facetious without any sort of tone and because that sort of post is something I have seen a lot of people make while being serious.

and tbh, you are technically incorrect in your initial statement; it is not actually random because with enough processing power and taking every effect into view, you could reproduce the effects of a coin flip in ANY situation correctly. similarly, a computer "random" generator is not random either. Just because some of the factors (like the effect of gravity or wind or electrical fields) are so small as to not be observable by the average person does not mean that its truely random. Your argument basically boils down to the idea that because some factors are unkown and some are just unmeasurable or maybe even theyre effects are unpredictable that its truely random which isnt really true.

and I like how mr. lightning was impressed by your post, he really is one of the most ignorant people I think Ive ever seen, and I went to high school in texas D: (ok, that texas part was a joke k? I <3 houston)

That is exactly what I'm saying. With enough processing power, sure you could predict the outcome, but the human mind is unable to do that. That is exactly the point i'm making, it is not random, but it is practically random to the human mind because there's no way with our biological machinery we could predict the outcome. I'm agreeing with you, not arguing against you. my point is that even if it's not truly random, as far as the human mind (with its lack of processing power) knows, it is. As far as computer random generators go, yes, is it not random if there's only algorithms behind it. That's why people use data on natural phenomena (wind speed at a certain time, etc) to generate random numbers. (even that isn't truly random if you knew all conditions that contributed to the wind speed at that instant and blah blah blah)

I didn't make myself clear that a coin toss technically isn't truly random (at least, unless you're spinning on the geometrical axis of the coin, i'm not an expert, look up the report on that experiment).

so, are we cool then?

yeah, as long as we are good that its practically random and not actually random.

edit: yes you did, just affirming :D and isnt there a 10char limit?

I have quite a few Spydies and quite a few Benchmades. I only carry the Benchmades. There IS a reason for this...

Stitchawl

balls. i don't know, i'm new on the block.

damnit 10char limit....cuz that was pretty genius! :-D

This thread reminds me of the episode of South Park where the smug people are huffing their own farts out of wine glasses.

I have three of the Lum mini Dejavoo folders. I haven't had lock-up issues but none of them have good ball detents so they will fling open easily if turned upside down. I don't care for that. I sent Benchmade an email several months ago and never received a response concerning this issue.

I wouldn't let this stop me from buying one. Any Bob Lum design is well worth having. If you go to ebay now you might be able to get the New Spyderco Lum Chinese sprint run in ZDP-189. When those are gone they will be tough to find at a decent price and while you might have to pay $150-$175 for one now they will be $200-$225+ by next year.
