Benchmade or Spyderco

Legit question. Most of the "BM has QC issues" statements come from folks on the interwebs from what I have seen.

I can't recall ever having a QC issue in any of the Benchmades I've ever purchased. Nobody I know who owns them ever has either.

Ask any Benchmade owner who isn't a member of BFC or InstaChatFaceGram or such and they probably have never heard of an issue.

Has anyone got a reference to Benchmade actually acknowledging issues and taking some sort of corrective action?

Or are we just compiling "the scales seemed squishy" comments from YouTube "experts" and filing it as QC trouble?

The issues are probably blown out of proportion, but I do think this is a case of "Where there's smoke, there's fire". When talking to people at the Dutch Knife Exhibition in years past, the issue popped up multiple times. My most heard complaint back then was about the bad / asymmetrical sharpening/grind. People joked about Benchmade employing a blind person to do it. It's probably nothing dramatic, but there is obviously the occasional lemon. The thing is, if you get a good one, you get a great one. Either inspect it beforehand, or buy from a vendor with a good exhange and returns policy.

Personally, 95% of both companies models don't do anything for me. I have the sub hilt and pattada from Spyderco. I like the subvert, but not $300+ worth!! Bedlam auto and vicar from the butterfly. The turret and the loco tempt me but not at full price.

Different strokes for different folks!! Both companies have a lot of !models that people love and have for years. Cant argue with their success!! 30+ years of operation for both.

They both also have customer service that all others should aspire too!!

Anyway that's my 2¢!

Opinions are like rectums, everybody got one and there's crap behind every one! Make your own choices

It should be remembered that both Benchmade and Spyderco are production knives built to a certain price point. As Bladeheads, could we have unrealistic expectations for today’s production knives?

A point many on these forums seem to ignore. If you want consistent perfection, prepare to put in some more OT to afford CRK's.

Edit: I apologize as my post above may have come across rather too blunt. I know I have been guilty of this on more than a few occasions myself.

I have both but am more of a Benchmade guy. The blade shape and ergos of most Spyderco knives due to the sometimes huge hole in the blade they demand is not my preference. Otherwise great knives though and I buy the ones I like.

off topic but wanted to say the Subvert is one helluva knife. The smoothest Spyderco I own and feels like a full custom. When you get it in your hands, it punches above it's price.

I had a rough go with BM around that time, 2017 & 2018. So much so that I gave up on them completely.

I was sincere a few pages back with my comment about hoping they are now on-point with QC. The reports of satisfied customers make me happy, even though I remain too skeptical to buy sight unseen.

Although I’ve had vastly better luck with Spyderco, I do have one that was a dud (from Taichung, no less—I generally LOVE Taichung Spydies) and I didn’t have the greatest experience with Golden on the issue.

So, while I prefer Spyderco>>>>Benchmade, I have no illusion that they’re perfect.

That sounds about right with what I was hearing around that time period, so far so good though with BM 2020 and onwards though for me. Funnily enough I just recieved a Spyderco Taichung model I have it in my pocket right now. A Spyderco Chaparral in Rafir Noble handle scales. The fit and finish is flawless what a beautiful set of scales, I love this knife so far, Spyderco are great, Sal is a stand up guy too, I've spoke to him a few times and he is always very helpful. It's not often the owner of a mass production company personally talks and greets all of his customers after so many years of being a mass producer, I'll always support Sals company for that reason alone.
