Benchmade or Spyderco

As for their QC, I would not worry about it. Most of their QC problems are behind them.

Do you have sources to back that claims? Im curious.

edit: just want to see that claim if there was a statement from the mothership that state they improved their QC over the year, nothing against the company.

If it's any consolation, I've bought 11 benchmades, a good number without even checking them, and aside from one being a little dull and one having an off center edge grind, they have all been excellent. I expect hand sharpened knives to not be as consistent as a robot sharpened knife a la spyderco, so having to sharpen a knife out of the box doesn't bother me.

Also, no broken omega springs, all blades are centered or near enough it doesn't matterand actions are great. I'm happy with Benchmade quality control.

I was initially more into Spyderco. I felt you got more for your money. But Spyderco's continuous price increases have kinda taken that factor out. Now if I'm not mistaken we are in for even more starting tomorrow. I don't own any Benchmades myself but I thought the ones I've handled were really nice. Can't speak for their customer service but I've only heard good things about it. I'll just say I was less than impressed when I used Spyderco's though. I guess now I'd say to just go with whoever's designs appeal to you more.

I was hoping of some sort of official statement from Benchmade that they vastly improved their QC or something like that.

I don’t own a lot of BMs so i can’t say but both of them have their quirks that needed my attention, like the Anthem off centering despite asking my dealer to check the best centered one they could find, 940-1 wonky grind, dull out of the box and protruding screw on the scale and a smidgen off centered too. My spydercos, never have anything aside from wonky grind on supersteel.

Still love my Bms after the love, tinkering and sharpening i gave them. In fact, that modded Anthem, i did, turned that knife, into my all time favorites but i wish i didn’t have to do all that out of the box or was it a blessing in disguise ? Who knows. Glad you have good experiences with them.

I think actions (pun!) speak louder than words. As for tinkering with a knife out of the box, I have to do that with spyderco a lot as well. My Native Chief was dry as a bone and needed some lube. My blade hq shaman needed some tlc to work as well as it could. My BBS para 2 needed a tweak. Nothing different than any of the benchmades I own. It's just harder to get that sweet action with no play on a Benchmade since they don't use the bushing style pivot like spyderco does. And I can live with a little play here and there, like on my S30v shaman or my Super Freek. Just don't feel like messing with them when they are working so well right now!

Owned different models of both, the hole in one was a no go and the other has to many parts. bought a Dozier workhorse and never looked back.

Do you have a source to back a claim that there was a deficiency in their QC? What metric are you using?

hey, woah no need come at me that aggressively. I think, it’s well known that BM’s QC is not the best in the world for few years now and yes at post #22 and #146, i explained my case. That being said, i just own 2 BMs and both of them have some inconsistencies.... nothing deal breaker and no im not bashing on the company and i still enjoy both of them.

If you feel just that the fact, that owning just 2 knives that has some inconsistencies isn’t sufficient to call a company QC lacking, you’re right. But, my point in that post you’re referring, was how he/she know BM QC issues are behind now? Was there a statement from them or it’s just anecdotal? That was all i was asking and not claiming BM QC was lacking.

Edit: Here was my fix for the Anthem off centering if you want to know what was my metric i used. The “Can’t leave anything alone” Thread

Yes, my sources...mine. I have 12 Benchmade's that are perfectly fine. However, I also have 3 Spyderco's that are also perfectly fine.

So that means that Benchmade is 4 times as good as Spyderco...I'll see myself out...

Owned 4 spydercos that a great and owned 2 bma that came with some quirks. Makes my spydercos i owned twice better than my bms. BUT, i prefer the overall design of BM and i carry my BM even more often than my spyderco due to the mechanism that i much more prefer over spydercos. There.

Legit question. Most of the "BM has QC issues" statements come from folks on the interwebs from what I have seen.

I can't recall ever having a QC issue in any of the Benchmades I've ever purchased. Nobody I know who owns them ever has either.

Ask any Benchmade owner who isn't a member of BFC or InstaChatFaceGram or such and they probably have never heard of an issue.

Has anyone got a reference to Benchmade actually acknowledging issues and taking some sort of corrective action?

Or are we just compiling "the scales seemed squishy" comments from YouTube "experts" and filing it as QC trouble?

Or a little lock stick, or vertical play, both of which usually work themselves out with break in and use. Just my experience. Sure you can go through a few to find one with no stick, and no play, and perfect centering, but most of that means nothing in the long run. My 20cv Griptilian had terrible lock stick, it's perfect after break in. Had a few with slight vertical play... Also fine after some use and break in. Also have great action on every one, without side to side play, just takes careful tweaking. Sure you can induce play if you ham fist them, but I can do that on a spyderco as well.

I quit listening to advice from youtubers. I still watch a few because they are fun, but there are ones who try to sound authoritative and fail. Just try the knives yourself and see if they are for you or not.

You get it. The QC complaints are a matter of opinion, for the most part. Hard to measure and generally useless.
