Benchmade pricing seems to have changed

hah, there's a little truth to that. If I'd paid MSRP for my Grip, I'd have been a little pissed at the edge. Nice knife, but nowhere near as sharp OOTB as some Brand-S or Brand-E knives I've handled.

I have heard stories bad grinds, uneven bevels, etc., I have owned literally hundreds of Benchmades and never had these problems, if someone could post some high def up close pics I would love to see what these look like. Prolly better to make a new thread though...

Everyone save the Benchmade money, and buy a Yamaha R1. Christmas present to myself. Then I am saving all my Benchmade money until 2015 for the Honda Civic Type R. (If it is less than 35k) Take that Benchmade! LOL! :)
I mean who can pass up a 165 MPH stock Civic? :)

Ya. Got an Adamus for $129 wtith free shipping and two days later went up to $169. Best to wait till you can get a nice price.

If you look far enough back in my posts you may get the joke.
I drive a Nissan GT-R. I will put it up against that stang any day. :)
Civic is FWD and its going to have almost 300 HP. It's ridiculous!

To me and what I have read ...........BM has not raised there prices. Dealers still pay the same for the product.
They just cant OPENLY sell (advertise) there selling price like they have been.
Am I missing something here ???
They can't openly or quiety, or secretly sell for less than MAP now. No more discount codes. They've gone the way of Oakley.

All I own are Benchmades, and have since 1999. I quit counting the number of uneven bevels I've received on new Benchmades. The cheap S'co Tenacious, otoh, had even bevels and was laser sharp right out of the box.

To be truthfull, I have never been a big Benchmade fan. I have this thing about centered blades, even on the value models.
I have a lg Grip and an H2O Grip. I have been thinking about rolling the dice and ordering a mini-Grip and a 530 for over a year. I have handled both and I don't think either are worth the new and unimproved prices.
My wife thanks you Benchmade!

I think Raging Cajun may have been the luckiest Benchmade buyer of us all... or his standards do not meet my standards for edges. I have had 2 Benchmades that came with edges that I have found tolerable in the last few years.

Unless something as egregious as a claim of hundreds of knives with no bevel/apex issues or another statement from Benchmade, I'm done with posting in this thread for a while.

I only hope that my favorite knife manufacturer is willing to come off of its high horse... or at least drag the quality of its steel up to the new pricing standards.

Lucky you, with your good fortune you should play the Mega Millions this Tuesday.

Dang, you have no idea how jealous I am of your GT-R! It's my realistic (HA!) dream car

And whoa 300hp in a FWD? I foresee a lot of torque-steer and Civic's crashing in the rain in a year or so :p

And more on topic, I have but one BM, it's the GPK exclusive M4 Mini-Grip with a number I like(256/500 or 2 to the 8th yay!) and it was good for the price. $110 for M4 and an Axis lock is worth it to me, probably the cheapest M4 blade I can get, although I'm not liely to get another except maybe an exclusive. BM knives just don't jump out at me in terms of design with the exception of the 7505 but California has dumb knife laws so I won't be getting one anytime soon. With the new pricing, a lot of the knives I was on the fence about are now fully off the fence. Oh well.

The lottery is just a tax on the poor, just like tobacco and alcohol tariffs

or his standards do not meet my standards for edges.

This may most likely be the case, that's why I requested pics. The only knife I've bought with eneven grind is the Tachyon II, (that's a balisong) original first production. To be honest, most of the BM knives I've owned over the years have been balisongs, I guess it's possible BM holds them to a higher standard.

Agreed! How about an intro, let us know how you ended up in this little corner of the world?

Thanks N8N and everyone else. So a little info about me. Hmm. My interest in knives is recent. I've been collecting multitools for a few years (hence my user name). As I've gotten some better Leatherman's, I've started to want to add a nice separate everyday carry blade. A friend gave me a Gerber Paraframe II last year, but it's really been poor quality. I purchased a Kershaw Leek about six months ago, but the blade is so thin and delicate looking at the tip that I'm almost afraid to use it. I wanted something more robust, and something ambidextrous, since I'm a lefty. When I finally looked at the Benchmade Axis lock I knew I found something special.

For work, I'm an I.T. consultant. In my business, there's a lot of reselling opportunities for hardware and services. Some manufacturer's reselling programs are great, some are laughable. One of the worst is brand of mid to high end networking hardware (firewalls, wireless access points). As a low volume partner, my distributor wholesale pricing is actually 5 - 10% higher than consumer street pricing from the high volume resellers. The manufacturer has MAP pricing, but never enforced it. Result, I'm not selling their product. That's one example (albeit at the extreme side of things). You can see where this thread hit a nerve for me.

I don't know how Benchmade's pricing structure works. I would assume it follows a tiered pricing structure (the more volume you purchase, the better your cost). Since the only change we know of is around Benchmade's MAP pricing policy, I strongly feel the impetus is coming from brick and mortars that can't compete.

As someone else mentioned, this is a tough issue to crack when they apparently haven't enforce MAP pricing for a long time. When we get used to a 25% discount as the norm, the that becomes the perceived value. The challenge for Benchmade shifting course so far into the game is it's a bit like locking the door after the horse is out of the barn.

The question is, will people still be willing to spend their money on it. On this point I said I think they'll weather the storm. My perspective as someone who's a newbie. Sometimes that's valuable, because a lot of people buying these things might be more like me and not be as fluent in the models/pricing and comparison's to other brands. On the other hand, I could be completely off base. Ultimately, time will tell and this will have been an interesting discussion.

I do see the 710 compared to the pm2 often. They have similar prices, even with this new pricing.
I've seen the grip compared to the pm2, and there's still a price difference with the new pricing.
Zt prices are much higher than benchmades, and personally I'd rather have a benchmade knife. I don't like the tank knives as much as the knives that cut well.
Kershaw in general seem to have lower prices, so that's not new.
I'm not sure I understand the idea that other companies are suddenly a better value. Maybe those are isolated examples.
If it came down to the best value, I'd just buy an Opinel and a Mora and be done with it.
End of the day I'll buy the knife that fits me. I think I'm going to take another look at the axis bonecollector...

Man,you are buying your spyderco in the wrong place. Even when less available paramilitaries are less than the new pricing on a 710. I think that with prices so high and, to me, less than great quality control even a brand like Kershaw has some USA made knives with more value.

I was just thinking the same thing. Not only can a Para2 be bought for less than a 710 now, but the perceived value is a little higher on the Para2 as well, IMHO.

I had 5 or 6 Benchmades on my Christmas shopping list this year, not to mention numerous Benchmades on my personal want-list. Unfortunately, I waited a little too long to start shoppping and now, because of the higher prices, I'll be substituting those 5 or 6 Benchmades with something I believe to be more fairly priced (given the construction, materials, QC, etc.).

For now, I'm done with Benchmade... at least until they either they step up their game by offering better products for the asking price or do some back pedaling on their MAP policy.
