About a week ago I emailed the service department at Benchmade to inquire whether or no they could replace the blade on my auto 9000 AFO ( yeah, I know its an old model) I even explained that I would happily pay the cost for the blade as I had used it as a screwdriver, and not surprisingly it broke a bit of the tip off. Well over a week now and no answer. can anyone give me the service email or a number for Benchmade so that I can be sure that I have the correct one?

I also have to ask them for a replacement axis lock spring, since I found that one of the two in my 730 ares was broken in half when I took my knife apart to clean it.

"How do I, as a private citizen purchase an Automatic knife from Benchmade™? I don't agree with Benchmade's Automatic knife policy and repair policy.
A. Benchmade Knife Company, Inc. follows guidelines outlined in the Federal Codes, which prohibit us to ship Automatic knife(s) to anyone other than Public Safety. ^^ what he said :D

I never use emails for stuff like that, just phone it in and I'm sure they can tell you prices over the phone. I know for stuff that is in production ie. griptilian, they only charge $20-$25 for a new blade plus shipping.

You might want to also make sure you can "legally" own your auto before calling them.

If you are outside the state of Oregon, do not send your knife directly to them. They will not return it to you as it is illegal for them to ship an auto knife across state lines except to 'Public Safety' personel. You might find a Benchmade dealer who would send it in and accept the return from Benchmade to forward on to you.

Thanks guys , I guess I didn't think about mentioning it but I am a police officer (I know, I know, boo hiss boo boo) I was just surprised I didn't even get a email back. kohai999 thanks for the number. As a side note I could even send this from my department and have it returned here. Maybe that will be sufficient. Sometime you have to send a scan of your ID with things that are police specific

Not to start a rant or anything but in all my 10 years as a police officer I have never seen one instance where I was relieved a civilian had a manual opener rather than an auto. If a guy want to carry a more expensive knife that opens a half second quicker, who cares. I'm just saying, I have never understood the logic behind this. if anyone else can shed some light on this please enlighten the grasshopper.

1. We are pretty LEO friendly at BladeForums.....a fairly conservative group to begin with, and knife people....so don't automatically assume that you are not welcome...because, unless you are a shameless dick with a badge, you are very welcome, and your work is appreciated.

2. Here is a hyperlink...basically it was politics and image, just like "black guns, and cop killing bullets" today, long read, but will give you all the light you need:

Only criminals use expensive high end black guns and expensive high end auto opening knives. You as a police oficer should know that.

Look at what is goning on in Texas. They are certainly some right minded folks down there seeking to keep these cop killer knives out of the publics hand.

Huh...What  Did I miss something on the news?

I can open my manuals faster than any auto I've ever owned, in fact I don't like autos so I sold mine.

Police in Texas have been confiscating AO knives. Claim that blade protrusion used to begin blade opening equates to a seperate button on an automatic opening knife.

People (or ambulance chasing lawyers who saw an opportunity) who have had knives confiscated file suit against manufacturers of AO knives and retail stores that sell them because if the police are correct then they have been importing into and selling an illegal knife.

I appreciate you guys being cool with the cop thing. As you can imagine that's not always the case and it generally puts you on the defensive from the get go. The lawsuit mentioned above is just a lawyers get rich quick attempt at the expense of common sense. Sometimes they can even change the perception of the truth to convince normally reasonable citizens in a jury that these "switchblades" are a danger to society. In the end it's common sense (which is becoming increasingly less common) which suffers.

I agree that it is probably driven by the lawyers. But it wouldn't exist if some police officers in a state that prides itself in being a shoot first ask questions later/your home is your castle kind of place didn't interpret an AO knife as an auto opening or switchblade.

The blame is more than just the cops "shooting first and asking questions later". Where I work if you charge someone, you take them in front of a magistrate who verifies the charges are applicable to the offense, then the defendant has a first appearance in front of a judge the next day, who also reads the charges, before it is sent to yet another judge who presides over the disposition. So more than just likely if someone was being trigger happy to charge someone with something, it's more than just the initial officer that saw it that way. I don't work in Texas but I can see how even the best meaning person who is not as knife savvy as yourself could interpret an assisted opening knife as an auto. Remember if someone doesn't know something its best to teach them so that they can make a better informed decision.

I think I know what you are saying and I agree. If a police officer confiscates your property you should get a receipt and be charged with something. If the local authority wants to take it to court then a judge decides if a law was broken or not. If the prosecutor doesn't feel that they have a case then charges are dropped and you get your stuff back.

I think that is how it is supposed to work. By filing a lawsuit these people are admitting that they are guilty.

I wonder what kind of fine they had to pay? I wonder if they got a ticket of some sort?

Hey, just an update, Benchmade repair finally sent me an email and they are gonna replace the entire knife with the updated model for the price of a new blade. Worth the wait. Makes me kinda sorry I bitched now. Sweet.
