Benchmade using spyderhole?

Just wondering if this was discussed or not.

I've never seen that Benchmade model before? What is it? Is Benchmade licensing the hole from Spyderco?

If Benchmade isn't licensing the hole from Spyderco I'd never buy one from Benchmade. I try not to support intellectual property theft.

I know it's a Spyderco hole and all but to me Benchmades and Spydercos are so different in design, that even with the hole it doesn't make me think of a Spyderco knife.

I thought of the Starmate as well. To me that reminds me a lot of a Spyderco, if I had not seen the logo I would have thought it was a Spyderco. You can't tell me that you had not thought the same thing?

I'm surprised Benchmade isn't using an axis lock on their newer models. To me, that is one of the only things BM has going for it.

Oh, it makes me think of one:

See to me that doesn't look like a Spyderco :) When I think of Spyderco I think of the Delica, Manix or the Military. I think Spyderco has moved beyond that style of knife with their newer knives. Actually to me it looks like a Walter Brend knife with a Spyderhole.

This is a brand new model, I assume? I'm guessing based on the Skirmish that BM is sdone fiddling with Spyderco's trademark on the hole. It looks like the sacred Spyderhole is no longer so sacred. We'll probably start seeing it in more brands as the years go by.

This is an upcoming red class knife called the Vex. Should retail for 40ish. Seems to use a variation of the Byrd steel.

In anyone wants to see the page on BM's site for the model...

http://www.benchmade.com/products/product_detail.aspx?model=10750

If you'd rather not click the link, here is what BM says about the feature in question.

"In addition, we have added a rounded thumbhole to the blade for ease of opening and adding that extra eye-catching touch."

Les & co., if you're listening, you are making it really hard for me to support your product. There are a lot of BM models I like, but stuff like this is ridiculous, especially when you have licensed this very feature from the owner on a past model of yours. The comparison to the Spydie Starmate, as noted above, is tough to avoid.

What Deacon said.

However this type of theft (and that's exactly what it is if they didn't get a liscense from Spyderco) is no surprise comming from BM after the Skirmish. You can rationalize it all day long if you want, but it's still theft.

Funny thing is most BM fans don't quite see it that way. Odd, isn't it?

Not odd at all, just a sign of the moral decay that is eating our country from the inside. The Benchmade fans KNOW the Spyderhole is the best opening system around, and they want their favorite company to use it. The fact that it is someone else's trademark is irrelevant to them. The fact that it is outright theft means nothing to them. They do not care if the person who created it gets credit or compensation, as long as they get to use it. And as long as enough people see nothing wrong with stealing (as long as they are the beneficiary and not the victim) things like this will continue. Until I read a post by Sal or Kristi saying this is a licenced use, I have bought my last Benchmade.

Odder yet that many fail to see the difference between a Utility Patent and a Trademark or Design Patent.

I just posted this on the other Benchmade Hole thread.
Haven't BM been using the round hole for a while now like on their Skirmish? Nobody seemed to care when that happened.

I seem to remember a couple of people caring...even to the point where someone brings the issue up from time-to-time, even years after the fact. The Skirmish was a custom design being brought into production. This is an actual Benchmade design that is clearly going to be using the trademarked Spyderco round hole.

Still waiting on an official statement by either company before I make any decision about Benchmade and where my money goes from this day forward...

Many people are. There are four threads on Spyderco's forum, all of them started independently. I'd like to say that the Skirmish was a slight mistake, and that BM has used the hole with permission this time, but I think Sal is out of the country right now so an answer may not be soon. I agree, it looks and smells like a knockoff, but I think final judgement should be witheld until we get an official statement.

Either this is a joke, or you were living under a rock. It's still brought up about once a month on one of the forums.
