Benchmade Vex vs. Spyderco Tenacious vs. Kershaw Skyline

How is it made in the USA if it's got foreign steel?
I'm not sure what your point is THG (and am quite sure I don't like it), but would love to here how you want us to promote our Country of Origin on the Skyline.

Sandvik steels are produced in Sweden, they have a Michigan facility. We process the completely here in the US. The rest of the knife in it's entirety is produced and put together in the USA, by real US taxpayers.

So do tell me THG, where is the Skyline made? How bout the Vex and Tenatious, where are they produced?

...and ks is giving Kershaw fans a hard time...

I just picked up a Skyline for $30 shipped and love it.
It has been my EDC for the last two weeks.
It's super light.
The liner lock is done right (doesn't stick up above the scales, locks up nice).
Steel seems decent (I haven't chopped any logs with it).
Flipper works well for me.
Seems at least as durable as my Microtech mini socom that used to be my EDC.
For the price I will be picking up two more later for the pack and glove box.

I gotta reply, this is my biggest pet peeve.

There is NOTHING remotely modern in your house that was 100% built from US sourced materials, workmanship, and assembly.

Anyone who "only buys made in the USA" products needs to realize that the MATERIALS are sourced from a global economy, and there is truly nothing made in any country without international trade.

Research modern manufacturing before blathering about patriotism and local purchasing.

The large Kershaw Cyclone can be had for under $55 and the mini for even less at some places

I tend to like 13C26 and I have not had any issues with the bead blasted 13C26 however I do care for my knives on a regular basis. I carry a silicone rag all the time for a quick wipe down of all my EDC's.

Personally I consider the Cyclone to be a top value in knifedom.

That's all I was asking.

The Tenacious is produced in China, if I am correct. I know it uses Chinese steel. I don't know too much about the Vex, but my Benchmade catalog says "Country of Origin: China," and it also uses Chinese steel.

I was asking what it means, dip, because the one whom I quoted said something that sounded paradoxical to my unknowing self.

Christ, and I thought it was hard enough asking a question on a computer forum without getting pounded.

Big yawn. Who cares really about origin when the product is good? The bottom line is the three greats are offering a great bang for the buck, priced around a modest $30. If I were looking for just a knife without any preconceived notions of what features it might need to have I'd probably get the Tenacious, just because I'd call myself a Spyderco guy. It is built tough and very reminiscent of the Manix. It is a bit like the spawn of a Military and Manix, and this is gooooood.

I, like some others, have reasons for not really being interested in most of Benchmade's products... not on account of any QA issues mind you. The Kershaw Skyline has been calling out to me like a siren and all bets are that I'll be picking one up soon, along with a Groove. Now if it were really stonewashed it'd probably be in my pocket already.

It's fascinating really how everyone has different priorities of likes and dislikes with these knives.

Having both the tenacious and skyline, I can tell you it would be hard to choose one over the other for me. I personally like the lighter/smaller size of the skyline. I'd much rather peel an apple with a skyline. I like the flipper a lot! The tenacious is beefier and nicer for heavier cutting.

But heck for all I know I may really like the vex if i owned it and used it a bit. Unless you can handle all three, you'll prolly be happy with any of them imo.

I actually made a thread about this (thought this thread is actually older...). I'm debating on the vex or the skyline for EDC. I've disqualified the tenacious because it looks really thick. It's thicker than the Native, right?

How come everyone seems to Vex hate?

Sorry if you felt pounded THG. My bad for watching the NASCAR race while posting (Hendrick fan).;)

Don't worry; I just watched china steal a medal from the US in women's Gymnastics because of unfair judging (which has been unanimously agreed upon by commentators and former professional coaches)

Looks like we're all having a bad day :grumpy:

I've only handled the tenacious, last time i ordered a spydie native and got sent a spyderco tenacious, I played with it for a day before i sent it back, and IMO everything on it was great, linerlock locked up perfectly, lock doesn't fail, great liners, G10 felt great, good pocket clip, left+right hand carry with tip up and down, adjustable pivot, and it didn't loosen, very sharp, but the blade steel and china stamp was a bit of a turn off, I'd probly try get one in the near future.

I would answer the OP; you referenced "shouldn't be too heavy" and you would like to try a flipper, (I love flipppers:)) then I would go for the Skyline. 1 question, has a knife ever rusted, for you, where you live? If so, I'd wait for the OD-1 that's comming from Kershaw.

The steel made be Swedish in orgin, but I'm pretty sure it is milled, cut, and ground right here in the USA. Same with Lodge cookware: it's has Brazilian pig iron in it, does that mean it's not made in the USA?

I'm pretty sure my custom shoppe 110 was made in the USA, even though the Sambar stag scales likely came from India.

Hi Johan,

The handle on the Tenacioius is .470 thick overall (12mm).

Liners are .065 thick (2) (1.65mm).
G-10 is .080 thick (2mm).
Blade is .120 thick (3mm).

I realize I'm biased since I designed the Tenacious, but in my opinion, there is no comparison between the Skyline and the Tenacious. They are two different kinds of knives. (sorry Thomas).

The Tenacious was created to be a tough no nonsense handfull of knife, The Skyline is more of a light gents folder.

The Tenacious also has a very ergonomic four way hourglass clip.

Hi again!

I just got my Tenacious! And I really like it! It sure feels like a "no fuss" knife!
Havent tried the other knifes mentioned in this thread, but this one really are a nice knife, especially for the price!

Sal, this is a very nice design indeed!
My favorite Spyderco blade style is the Delica 3, not the 4 with the less pointy tip, but it might hold up better?
A knife I really would like to see is this Tenacious with the delica blade, and a little more aggressive knurling on the G10 handles, like the military and perhaps S30V steel. Other than that this knife fits my hands really nicely, with all the measurements!

So far this knife fits my folding knife needs best!

I and probably many others here really appreciate that a company like yours takes time to attend forums and help people out! Really makes you feel better buying your products!

/Johan

My new Skyline is my new favorite EDC. Got it a week ago and it barely leaves my pocket!

Except to play with the flipper of course...

Back to the original thread: I have come to love the flipper, as on the Skyline, McGinnis Tuition and Kershaw ENER-G. What's not to like? Remember! Push down from the top.

"Back" from what, the dead? You've been a member since 2006, and in your very first post in four years of membership, you zombie-fy a thread that ended in August of 2008??
