It's not true that they have different fans. I'm a member of both the Spyderco forum and the Benchmade forum. True, there are some people on both forums who don't like the other company for some reason, but as a member of both there are MANY people I've seen who post significantly on both forums. And, I know of many people on the Spyderco forum who are fans of BM even if they're not on the BM forum and vice versa.

As for my vote, (yeah, you guessed it) I don't have a preference for one over the other.

Spyderco for lightweight, slim carry and MUCH more bang for the buck (BM has no answer for the Delica/Endura, Salt, and Native lines), BM for heavy utility (Spyderco has nothing with tool steel blades and the axis locks).

Spyderco for better folding fighting knives (Yojimbo, Manix, Civilian), Benchmade for automatics.

Long winded, but I also love both.

Both are great companies and feel you really cant do better than these two for production folders. I love them both as well but feel spyderco designs slightly more towards the lower end market (price wise) and benchmade is a little bit of a step up in the market. I wouldnt be able to decide because i have great knives from both companies.

Spyderco for me. More functional or something, but I admit it's mostly subjective.

I love and own both, but Spyderco is my favorite.

If I could only have one knife between the two and I couldn't see what it is before I got it, I'd probably choose a Benchmade. There are almost no benchmade designs I don't like. And my experience with Benchmade's fit and finish is somewhat better than Spyderco's (never had a flawed Benchmade). But I don't have to just have one knife.

That's why I'm a Spyderco guy. I really feel like the knives Benchmade makes are too similar...they're all great, but once I got one or two Benchmades, I had all the Benchmades from the lineup that I really wanted...

But Spyderco has vastly different designs all the time--I prefer the very spydery knives, like the dodo or the para, as opposed to their more conventional lineup, like the delica (where I'd rather have a minigrip).

Also, Spyderco ergonomics are unmatched.

Plus, call me crazy, I just like how they look more.

the first knife I bought owned and carried was spyderco, but I will have to say benchmade because of my benchmade bali-songs

Spyderco gets almost all of my knife money because I have found them (Sal Glesser & co.) to be unfaltering in the integrity department. Mr. Glesser is always on the forums, interacting with his ELU's. That, to me, is a sign of a man who really cares about his customers. Spyderco is the best in my book! Period.

Best wishes,
3Guardsmen

Seriously. I enjoy both brands quite a bit.
On the whole, I would say I like Spyderco more. Spyderco isn't affraid to make an ugly knife. I think that's good for some reason.

Not again......

Yup, not again. . .

There had been countless discussions in the past comparing these two companies. A lot of knife knuts' sentiments are that Spyderco leans more towards utility and function (premium steel and materials, superb ergos) while Benchmade leans more towards design and innovation (the famed Axis lock and F&F).

Sorry no vote for either here, I LIKE 'EM BOTH!

tough one! I love the axis lock and g10... but then again, I very much enjoy the light weight of spyderco... I seriously cant choose because ITS A TIE!:o
