Benchmade VS Spyderco

Spyderco have way more knife designs that I like. They keep me interested and buying, where as Benchmades are all pretty similar and boring/ordinary as far as designs go. However, I feel that Benchmades, overall, are constructed better and less prone to annoying flaws. Almost every Spyderco I own has a bit of blade play, and that's getting really annoying to me, where as my Benchmades are perfect.

When it comes down to it, my two favorite knives are the BM 806D2, and the Spyderco Chinook II, and I usually pick my Chinook when it comes time to carry one.

Spydercos are better in design and funtion, and Benchmades are put together with more care and quality overall.

Don't own a Benchmade yet, but really happy with my new Spyderco Military. Real sweet, wicked sharp.

Thanks to all who took part. Here are the results of the contest so far: 40 people took part, 13 of them vote both companies, 12 vote Spyderco, 10 vote Benchmade and 6 didn't vote(I guess they prefer both?).Also took part Gary007 who hasn't experience with Benchmade's knives:)

i have use both brands, and i gotta admit spyderco outperformes benchmade in terms on cutting, but BM is just so much better looking and innovative.
I gotta go with benchmade also because im a huge balisong fan:D (spyderfly is okay too, but extremely ugly)

I'm a spyderco guy, but what do you mean the materials are way better? Minus the like two limited run ZDP knives (and I think you might still be able to defend Benchmade since you can get damascus from them, if you buy the damacus quality thing..never used it myself) they both seem to use a majority of super high end materials.

Benchmade more innovative than Spyderco... Wow...

Thankfully, the courtesy on this forum is so high that the likelyhood of a fight braking out is pretty low .

Actually, I think the lack of flame is due to the fact that Benchmade owners are all weenies who'll run rather than fight:D

Flame retardant suit -

Bunker stocked with provisions -

Popcorn -
check

see you all after the apocalypse bwahahahaha:D

Yeah, what gives?

BM has such a huge range of products, from a $20 Red class mini-pika up to gold class knives that go for close to $1000. Most are in that $100-$200 range, and I would say that BMs in that range are very comparable to the Spydies in that same price range. I cannot honestly see how Spyderco uses "better materials" on the whole. Perhaps I do not understand what someone else's understanding of "better materials" is....

A lot of it comes down to looks and locks. I prefer BM for both reasons. All my BMs are axis locks except for my 910HS btw....

I have no beef with Spyderco or their fans. :)

i have no beef neither. im a big fan of both.

taking a look at the g-10 that both companies use and the blade steels is where i draw my conclusions.

the g-10 on spyderco knives feel a lot more solid and less flexible. g-10 on benchmade knives to me feels a lot like plastic. it even looks plasticky. i recall that sal said that they get special g-10 that is woven with more fibers or something than normal g-10. i will say that the g-10 "feel" on the 732 ares is exceptional. it looks smooth but really has GREAT grip.

as for blade steels s30v which is used on almost all golden made knives is considered a higher end steel than 154cm, but im glad benchmade is slow upgrading so thats quite nice too. d2 and m2 arent exactly stainless so that doesnt count.

the egros is what im talking about when i say design. just looking at and handling both companies knife and you can see what they try to accomplish. spyderco is geared toward working knives and although many consider them ugly, i think they are beautiful. most of benchmade's knives look like they aren't designed for hard work but rather the more casual use such as occasional opening of packages and other edc chores, although there are some excellent knives with excellent ergos eg. afck 806

so the bottom line is that i like benchmades fit and finish more and presentation more, but as an actual hard beater knife, spyderco is my choice.

Overall I'd say I'm a Spyderco fan. I like the fact that they have more locks to choose from and the designs as mentioned before feel more inovative and risky. Benchmade on the other hand has some pretty solid products but their pricing sometimes doesnt seem decent, then again the two companies cater to different crowds. Benchmade does have their autos and butterfly knives going for them. In the end I'm still more a spyderco fan then benchmade.. but by just a little.. so buy both.

I only own 2 BM and 10 Spydies.

I hope sal is listening, I'm ur #1 fan. Do I hear a discont coming my way?

:D
