Which models are you talking about? The ones I own are pretty damn solid. Perfectly centered, good F&F and very smooth. The only issue I've had is some of the older models weren't particularly sharp out of the box, but they seem to have fixed that issue.

uh, Do you have the ones that come in the red box?

I know what he's talking about, my 551 feels incredibly cheap and flimsy. But I've seen some destruction tests of this knife and I'm pretty impressed on how well it holds up. I don't think Benchmades are worth what most sites are charging for them, but there are a few websites where you can get 25-30% discounts, which is what seems like they are worth. But my 710D2 feels really sturdy and very well-built, it's a very heavy duty knife. I'd just stay away from anything with Valox handles if I were you.

What Benchmade is OP referring to?

My 585 and 580 are both very solid knives...I don't like the plasticy feel of the Valox scales...don't know why they didn't use G10 except perhaps price.
I think overall Benchmade are solid knives...troll maybe...?

my mini nitrous stryker wasn't as sharp as i expected it out of the box ("black box" which i believe is designed for LE/ Military) and the blade is not centered when it's close. (but this doesn't really bother me)

Why do benchmades feel so cheap and not put together well?

Thats a very broad and vague statement. Did it occur to you, that it might have been a good idea, to include a Benchmade experience or 2 in your OP?

Right now, it sounds like your trolling for Benchmade fans.

i have had several benchmades ...grip..mini grip...pres....what im saying is there handles feel cheap compared to say a syderco frn or even most sogs and i even say cold steel even feels better built then benchmades. for example i traded a mini grip last month for a cheaper sog cause it just feels in the hand so cheap. i just dont get the prices for those things.

I don't like the handles on the fullsized grip. It really would benefit from an upgrade, of either solid G10 handles or at least full liners. Old news though, many have given up hope that Benchmade will ever listen.

Borders on trolling. Fortunately, no one seems to be taking the bait.
Your audience needs some context as to why you would even make such a statement.
Every Benchmade knife I've held or owned felt/feels pretty solid.

Much better effort. Thank you.
My guess it mostly has to do with handle material. The Grip line is polymer, no?
Seems you're comparing to similar FRN handles though, so it must just be an aesthetics question.
I don't own a Grip, but I've handled them. They seemed okay to me.

While a knife may seem over light and toy-like as a result of said lightness that doesn't mean flimsy or cheaply made. Many people seem to think it does. The Griptilian for example, I don't like the grip shape and so don't own one but have handled a few and all of them- while light weight- were solid knives. And I can't see a knife like that having such popularity if it was poorly made or flimsy, especially on a forum of knife enthusiasts. Some people equate heft with solidity "My -insert brand here- weighs as much as a brick! It's so high quality!"

I only own a couple BM's at the moment and while I am in no way a fanboy, I do like the ones I have very much and plan on buying more.

Too many people conflate weight with strength. Metal knives feel tougher than FRN ones, but in reality, FRN can endure quite a few things that metal cannot. Most knives from decent manufacturers don't break at the handles, even on linerless knives. It is the tiny metal parts in folders that are actually the weakpoints from a durability standpoint. While the hollowness of full size grips, and plasticky handles feel similar to some lower quality products of years past, they are in fact extremely tough quality knives. Now Benchmade does at times have some real hit or miss quality control. I have had three different BMs that hit the backspacers when they closed. Easy fix, but really shouldn't happen at those prices. Funny enough, those three knives are 3 out of my 4 favorites Benchmades.

Give a 710 a try, or a 707, or a 940, or a 950, or an 810, or a 255, or... Well you get the picture.

The knives you mentioned (the grip line, and presidio) are basically Benchmade's entry level models and while none are what I would call flimsy, the valox and noryl gtx handles can feel cheap. Either buy higher end Benchmades with higher end handle materials or stick with spyderco for $50-$100 knives. The $150-$200 range is really where benchmade starts to shine.

Interesting that you traded a grip for a SOG considering cheap feeling knives and poor quality control is pretty much what SOG is known for. Either way, I don't think I would ever trade a grip for ANY SOG...Ever.

Grips feel cheaper because they are almost 100 dollars cheaper than most other Benchmades. They could build them with G10 handles, but then they would cost more. G10 needs to be machined, not molded. The additional cost of machining means it wouldn't fit into the market where benchmade wants them to fit into the market. They have other knives for those price points. Make no mistake, Benchmade is among the best in the business. The griptilian is an excellent solid knife at an excellent price.

Sounds like trolling to me. The Griptillians seem to have a reputation for feeling light and flimsy. But they are also held in great esteem as working knives. Making a broad generalization about an entire company based upon one knife is foolish at best.

Wow, another borderline trolling comment. I agree that the handles on the griptilian lineup aren't the most solid feeling. But it strikes me that we're talking buyer error here. You clearly prefer G10, and since Benchmade has a very large lineup, perhaps you should be buying one of their G10 or framelock models? I mean, if you already bought a griptilian and didn't like the handles, why did you end up buying more of the same type, eh?

I'd suggest the Rift or the Monochrome, or maybe the sequel or onslaught. Or the Shoki. Actually, the list goes on. Just avoid Noryl GTX, or else get one with custom scales (wilkins or cuscadi, for instance).

If you actually are serious about these things, you might start off with a little more detail when you make your posts. This being the second inflammatory post from you that I've seen so far today.

The OP is obviously new to the knife game and doesnt realize he's trolling...I think.
Perfectstorm- Once your BM falls apart, then you can come out from under your bridge...until then, read more and post less.
