Benchmade's QC Problems.

Thank you. Your analysis and response to my post #150 is a prime example of exactly what it was trying to convey, and don't try to read something into it that is not there; 1) I never stated I would switch to buying $25-$50 knives and 2) I am not a member of facebook, have never used facebook, and never will.

1) you're welcome 2) oh never mind then. When you mention $25 - $50 knives and going after other brands I just assumed, and 3) oops my bad. Well, you and the other guy have more than just your names in common.

The usual tactic for someone who has nothing to offer other than blather in defense of a position is to attack the messenger, not the message itself, which is exactly what you have done. When a discussion degrades to that point it is no longer worth responding to. I will not participate in this thread anymore. To those that have replied and offered constructive comments to further the conversation, thank you.

Update.

I've handled both the Rift and Griptilian more. I'm still not warming up to the handle on the Rift. The Grip I am starting to really like. It's light but is big enough for my man hands. The axis lock still worries me. I guess I thought it was going to feel more similar to a lock back when depressing it. I got the small skinner in the Bone Collector series this morning and I really dig it.

Same boat here, 'cept I've had hundreds. I do got that new 940cf coming so maybe that will be the one.

an every gold class I've had highly excels in the fit and finish dept, of course, they've all been balisongs.

I am honestly afraid of Benchmade's balisongs. I have handled a few and they are so freaking sharp that I imagine myself shredding my hands with my mad bali skillz!

I have a BM 32 Morpho Balisong, it is a beautiful thing.

Since the new pricing structure, QC issues have been all the rage.
Uneven grinds and off center blades being the predominant complaint.

I didn't even know they changed their pricing structure.

I've got a Rift coming on Monday, what is it that people don't like about the handle?

As to the Axis lock in general, it is a great locking system, IMO.

Mainly the notch that separates the pinky from the rest of the hand. It creates a hot spot when I bear down. I'm adjusting to it though. Its a killer blade.

I just worry about those springs...

Seriously, no need to worry about the springs unless you are of the type that flicks your knife open several hundred times a day.

I have only seen a handful of complaints about broken springs and with a couple of questions and honesty on the part of the one complaining, it usually comes down to the person sitting in front of the tv and thwacking the knife for hours on end.
I have even seen pics of broken springs on knives with pristine factory edges.

One more thing , as someone who has used Benchmade's warranty service on several occasions, I can say it is outstanding and usually quite fast. I have never had a failure with any Benchmade I've owned but I go after discontinued, collectable pieces and send them in for spa treatment.

I bought it because I think it has a purdy handle color.
I can see what you mean about the "bump," I'll check it out tomorrow and report back.
Don't worry about the springs, as in firearms, any mechanical object is subject to failure, the springs in the BM's that I have are all quite simple and reliable.
Add to this the fact that I have about 50-100 folders, I'm sure I can find some other one to kill the time with if one of my BM springs ever breaks.

Thanks for the comment. I've never spent this kind of money on a pocket folder. It's funny; I bought a Benchmade because I wanted a tough USA made folder that is well made and now I'm worrying about it.

The handle is growing on me the more I hold it.

Seriously, those springs are NOT going to fail on you, I've owned hundreds of Benchmades, NONE of them have failed, word.

I'm curious as to the location of a break in the omega spring, possibly at the corner of the bent leg that goes into the liner? Also has anyone considered making their own?

There have been others who have made their own springs. I can remember exactly which wire they used though...

Saw you've already got both up for sale. I and several others agree: Do NOT worry about the springs! Enjoy both, use both, knowing if you've ever got a problem, Benchmade will handle it. Keep it for years, wear out the blade, get another put on for $25. Their other QC "issues" aside, that's hard to beat.

You really don't need to worry about the springs. See my response below the next post.

I am one of those people. I have been one of those people with my Axis knives for 15 years. I have NEVER had a broken spring.

I've owned dozens and never had an omega spring issue.
Nor have I had any quality control problems from BM.
I won't pay their premium price now that it has gone up but I still love my BM's.

I do or I will send them back. This is not due to worrying about the springs though. It's due to the fact that I've been carrying a knife in my pocket (no clip) and wanted to try out a knife with a clip again. I prefer the no clip method it seems. The more I hold the Rift the more I love it. It's too big for pocket carry without a clip though.

I can't remember where but I seem to recall that benchmade's springs are rated for something like 10,000 cycles? My little guy has a mini grip since October 2012 that he opens and closes constantly with no issues.
Although I prefer liner locks, the Axis is definitely more trustworthy in my opinion. Some of Benchmade's test vids are pretty impressive regarding the lock strength.

I don't know whether there's a spec, but at least two of mine have probably done that ^3.
