Bertram Hen and Rooster knives.

Here are some pictures of the knives:

I had to open one and look at it - It was awesome. The rest will have to be opened as well. I just cannot help myself!

More pics will surely follow.

Looking forward to that, David! That Equal End on the far right catches my eye. Would love to see some more pics of that one as well as the rest.

That one has some really sweet horn handles. I will photo them all.

The changes in the tang stamp from one era to the next are slight. To date, it is a good rule of thumb knowing that if there are little birdies on the handle it isn't an older one.

I wish that I could take better pictures, and I will try when I can get some free time, but here are some quick pics of the ones I just got:

The ivory, horn, and the pearl is just super on these knives, but what really impresses me, is the action - they walk and talk so smoothly it is unbelievable. the insides are beautifully polished, and I really like the fact that the liners are nickel silver, and not brass.

I agree the quality of their pearl is outstanding, with beautiful colors and shimmer. The quality of the stag they used seems to rival some of the old Sheffield makers. Don't have any of their ivory, but suspect you're correct about the quality. Really super knives made with quality material and craftsmanship. DavidZ you have a really nice group that appears to be numbered, great catch. As I said my regret is that I sold some of the ones I owned. Charles

This thread really got me interested in these pre-1980 Bertram H&R's. I like them all but the pic that DallasSTB posted of his CM-6 lit a fire under me and I started looking around to see if I could find one like it. With the help of a well known dealer I now have one in my hands.

This is my first Hen & Rooster knife and I'm glad this thread convinced me to go with a pre-1980 version. I know nothing of the quality of the newer H&R's, I'm just glad I got an older one.

Here's a few pics. They aren't bad with the indoor lighting but I was hoping for some sunshine today.

These photos of the tang stamps help to show the mirror polished finish of the blade.

This one is going in my pocket first thing tomorrow morning. I like those Equal Ends that David posted pics of too. I'll be looking around for one of those before ya know it.

Railsplitter -
That is a sweet find you have there! Awesome stag as well. I am still trying to figure out which one to carry of the group, or if I even want to. I almost feel guilty about breaking up the set by using one.

I completely understand, David. I don't think I could do it but I know how tempting it must be. I would have to be in your situation to know for sure what I would do. It's easy for me because this is the only one I have. Very difficult decision you are faced with.

Feeling guilty about the prospect of carrying one indicates to me that you should not break them up or carry them. Unless of course you also feel guilty about not carrying one. ;) If that's the case, then unfortunately, you are going to have to deal with guilt either way. Best wishes in resolving your dilemma. :)

That's a mighty fine knife you got there Rick. Congrats and thanks for the conversation.
