Besides CPK knives, whaddaya like?

Freaking lasers Friday! Checking out the absolutely INSANE JGX3-130 "Laser Obstacle Clearance Instrument" 🤯

OK, that thing is scary. Did I hear you say that the active high power laser is in the IR band?

That makes it even more dangerous. It’s quite apparent that even reflected light/backscatter can be an eye hazard. Did it come with any safety wavelength filtering glasses?

*** we already have morons aiming strong lasers at aircraft, but IR at this kind of power would be a real hazard.

There was a case of two US military personnel who were court martialed when it was discovered that they were using the full power LAMs to blind the stray dogs around camp on deployment in the M.E.

That’s the inherent danger of IR lasers: with intense visible light, the instinctive reaction is to blink and turn away, minimizing exposure which is what does damage. With high power IR, you don’t see it, and won’t notice until damage has been done.

It did come with safety glasses, and I do stress safe handling practices towards the end of the video.

Oh, I know you’re familiar enough with stuff like this for responsible safe practices.

What worries me is that there are a lot of clueless, or just downright stupid people out there. Just googled the model and saw a video of someone using one to burn large bugs on the ground with other people and kids around (obviously none of the people visible had safety glasses).

Eyesight is one of the most precious and yet delicate things we have. Hate for someone to learn too late, that these things have the potential to cause irreversible damage until after someone’s eyesight is impaired.

I don't think that covers it. I've been around large powerful lasers, and it's dangerous enough even when the laser doesn't move and the path between components on an optics table is planned, let alone some gadget that can be waved around.

OG Busse Stripper Badger Attack Ergo just landed… šŸ˜
