Best 3-1/2-4in folder for hunting expedition.

If this is to be primarily a hunting knife, you should give serious consideration to the BladeTech Pro Hunter with S30V. Not as "tactical" as the Contego, but better designed for field dressing and still handy as an EDC.

I have field dressed quite a few deer with just a Case slipjoint (folder). Another practical knife is the Kabar Becker BK-16 (fixed blade-drop point style blade) and plenty for the task at hand and a darn nice field knife to boot.

Nothing particularly special is required other than the knife be very sharp and be of good enough quality that it holds an edge. I like the Spyderco Delica for a EDC, but it would not be my choice to take hunting. I have field dressed deer with a swiss army knife, so I guess sharp is what's really important.

True, but he will also be using it for camp chores.I think a fixed is more appropriate but maybe he just wants a folder. I think a Swiss Army knife on Elk would be quite the chore.:)

It's no-nonsense, locks, and doesn't require any special opening or closing tricks. And it will last a lifetime and still be a classic. Do it!

I should also add that for $150 he or you could get one from the Buck custom shop in S30V. There's a reason it's still regarded as a great knife.

Especially a classic. :D I wasn't recommending a SAK, I was simply relaying that the most important aspect is the blade is sharp.

Considering the situation you have described, here's another vote for the Buck 110. Probably a little late to get an S30V blade from the custom shop, but the old stand-by in 420HC is no slouch.

Buck Custom Shop 110 in S30V and elk antler. Yep, it's a user.

That elk handle is gorgeous. If it wasn't for the fact that the Mrs plans this as a Christmas gift, I would already have one.

Spyderco Stretch is shaped for game processing but also works well as an EDC folder. The Buck 110 is also very good, and that model has probably processed more deer than any other model of folding knife. It is heavy, though.

I'll second the recommendation for the Buck Vanguard for the game dressing, and then something like a Victorinox Fieldmaster/Hunstman for the folder that will become the EDC. Throw in a Fallkniven DC4 sharpening stone and he's all set, and probably still has change out of his $150.

Buck Ecolite 110, all the greatness of the 110, with a lot less weight to pack around in the field.

Or an Ontario RAT 1, great quality and the open back design makes cleaning it out easier in the field.

Case trapper and Mora companion. He can buy a Kershaw skyline to edc later - all three will cost him less than half the cost of the Contego.

You could grab a Knives of Alaska folding Hunter. (Great knife, D2 steel, USA made, ~$60) AND an ESEE-3! That would be an excellent combo!

I'd also recommend a fixed blade for hunting purposes. It's always a PITA to clean out a folder after gutting a deer.
