Best all around knife.

Light to medium duty: 1/8" thick, 3"-5" blade
Medium to heavy: 3/16" thick, 6"-8" blade.

For my upcoming trip to AK (30 days of primitive camping), I'll be taking my Condor Hudson's Bay and a knife I built myself:

Tough question. There just isn't "one" for me since it depends on what the destination and tasks at hand are. My most carried and used is still my Spyderco Endura Wave, my favourite EDC since Christmas has been a Benchmade Rift, and my new camp/roadtrip/all-around knife starting this year is a Busse Team Gemini Light Brigade. If I had to walk out the door and choose just one for all urban and outdoors carry from here on out though, it'd have to be my Busse Leaner Meaner Street. The blade is 4.25" and its made out of INFI steel with G10 handles. That size and shape can handle anything I can think of in the bush or for utility while still being light and city-friendly to carry.

Here's the TGLB along with a Busse Active Duty which has since been traded but is similar in size to the LMS:

Best alrounder for me:
Esee 4, great size and thicknes, not too heavy, superb sheath, affordable, what's not to like :)

I had an original Mean Street --- .25 inch, 3.5 inch blade or so. Excellent, somewhat Q-Ship, short fighter. But an all around knife, no. Even my fairly short Carbon V SRK (.375 but longer than the Mean
Street) would, for me, be a better all around knife.

But different strokes for different folks and mileage may vary. All mentioned here are excellent knives :-).

Started to go with an ESSE 4 but got an Entrek Javelina. Have a look at one. They are not as well known but very nice semi custom well heat treated 440c steel.

Condor Woodlaw, for the following reasons:
1. It is basically a "Full-Tang Mora"
2. It has an exposed tang
3. Scandi grind
4. 1075- a little soft but it holds its edge well enough and strops up to hair popping sharp with just a bit of dust on my jeans
5. The Micarta handle is really modifiable.
6. Nice Leather sheath
7. Cheap, sharp, nice in the hand and can take a real sh*t kicking

I have a Kabar MK1 which has the most comfortable handle I've ever held. If the blade wasn't swaged towards the tip....it could be my Grail knife. I might buy another (cue the divorce papers) and grind the back of the clip point flatter to make it more comfortable for my thumb when doing fine work. The steel is exceptional.

I own a dozen Moras. Love them but like a full tang. I'm sure it's psychological as I've beaten on them and never had an issue.

I have a Mora 311. Could circumcise a gnat. The steel is just the best I've ever dealt with. Literally hair splitting and holds for ever.

My bush choices: Woodlaw on my belt, Wetterlings 20" in my hand, SAK in my pocket, and a sharp little Mora around my neck.

Budget and intended use? I carry a folder everywhere. Often a fixed blade also, fairly small. And a small SAK. If I'm out and about in the woods and need a bigger knife, there are all kinds of good options.

I like my BK2 too, but try walking 20 city blocks or 5-10-15 miles in the woods or mountains with it in your back pack, it quickly feels like your carrying an Anvil.
And re: an "All around" knife, a BK2 is not very efficient in a defense scenario, though if you conk someone on the head with a BK2 you'd probably knock them out.
But against a Bear forget it.
