Best all around wilderness cartridge(centerfire..sorry no .22LR)

Way up from the Botom. I thought I remembered this one.
I stated 30/30 but would love to elabarate.

I have a Marlin lever gun from before safeties but it had a few tricks played on it. First it was re-chambered to 30-30 Akley improved. This means I get more velocity and can still shoot the regular 30-30 through it. It just fire-forms the case for reloading.

Some other stuff done to it; Barrel cut to 16" along with the magazine tube, sythentic stock, Ashley Ghost Ring sights, Action job and best of all it was hard Chromed.

I love making snapshot on the steel groundhogs at 100yds from the standing with it.
Mine was made by a smith named Jim Brockman if I recall.

My vote for the best wilderness caliber (ex. cal. 22LR) is the 30-06. Mostly because I use it myself in my old german mauser 98.
It is really a great caliber. It has a flat trajectory suitable to shoot smal game and the neccessary punch to kill large animals. And it is widespread, you can buy ammo all over the world.

12 gauge !!!

* cheap
* robust
* comes in many, many formats (slugs, SSG, buck shots, tracers for signaling, you name it...)
* can be found just about anywhere in the world
* even if the barrel is a little dirty, it won't explode in your face as easily as a rifle.

Actually, a short pump action is my #1 pick for just about everything, from hunting to survival and urban self-defense. In short range, my guess is that slugs can even disable a guy wearing kevlar... the impact is just tremendous...

I've killed a bear with a slug, once. Hit him in the face. It took most of his head away...

The only problem with 12 gauge is the limited efficiency at a longer distance...

Cheers,

David

Since you're saying we should show the "best all around centerfire cartridge for the wilderness"..., which doesn't add "SURVIVAL skills (SURVIVAL gun)... I'll add my vote for the .30-06.

If we were add the "SURVIVAL gun"..., and you won't allow me to put in the .22 :mad: ;) ..., I'd make it the .308, either a bolt rifle for hunting, or (semi)auto - with 20 to 30-round magazines if there are a bunch of people who don't like me surviving :rolleyes:

As much as I love the .30 caliber, I would pick the 12 ga. over any centerfire cartridge for survival. In fact I think the .410 would also be an excellent choice.

Since I can't pick the .22, I'll take a 12 gauge, followed by .270 and 30-30.

Sorry, but in my opinion the .30-06 is overrated. I would put it after a .300 short win mag. and 7mm. The aught six just isn't as flat shooting.
