Best bang for $... production knives

Byrd line of lockbacks. +1 for the KaBar Dozier folders. Quality design, materials, fit and finish. Only things not to like with any of these is the Doziers are made in Taiwan and the Byrds are made in China. Best bang for the buck USA made = Kershaw Skyline IMO.

Happy Thanksgiving. I agree with Spyderco. They seem to have a grasp of the tradeoff between quality and cost that no other firm does. Kershaw is almost as good, but chooses cost over quality a bit more (Sandvik steel vs VG-10). CRKT chooses cost, but at least they pass the savings on to the buyer, unlike Cold Steel, which makes CRKT knives at Spyderco or Benchmade prices (or more.)

The Kershaw Sandvik is an excellent steel in my opinion. I'm quite fond of it actually.

"Best bang for the buck" to me is more related to the cost of a knife spread over the time of actual use.

An inexpensive knife that sits in a drawer after a couple of weeks of use had little "bang for the buck", while a more expensive knife that you use for decades can attain good "bang for the buck".

As such, my "Best bang for the buck" knives have been a Cold Steel Trailmaster, a Benchmade 710hs, and a Microtech Amphibian - knives that are still in the EDC rotation and/or being used regularly after years of ownership.

I have some others that are getting into that category, such as an 800HSS I picked up and a Ritter mini-Grip in M2 that I use regularly.

Lava_lamp, the reason Kershaw uses Sandvik is because their knives that use it are American made, made not Japanese made like some of the Spydercos that use VG10, and FWIW, Sandvik is an exceptional steel for my uses.

Good point. Thank you. I didn't put it together that buying VG-10 means not buying made-in-the-USA.

I love Kershaw but have stopped buying their knives with Sandvik steel. I love the ones I have with S30V, but find the rust-spotting and relative lack of edge retention to be deal-killers for me. I don't have much experience with 154CM, but maybe that would be a possible upgrade.
