Hey guys. Saving for a new edc folder. Looking mainly at benchmade, well, because it is benchmade. Just wondering what the best edc blade would be between-

- griptilian (mini or not)
- barrage (mini or not)
- emissary
- pardue
- mini presidio ultra

Tell which one is best and two reasons why it tops all others, thanks.

Edc is mostly utility use. So edge retention is important
I prefer heavy blades, but most enjoy a lighter weight folder with a slim pocket profile.

I recommend emissary, because its very light, great steel on that blade, super minimal pocket profile.

Pricey though

My favorite Benchmade to carry is the 630, but I think the pocket clip is hideous, so it doesn't get as much carry time as it should. My second favorite Benchmade to carry is the 790 Subrosa; it is very lightweight, has titanium handles, a thick S30V blade, and a spring assist that I'm not too fond of.

Out of these you have listed, I would get a full-size Griptilian. Right now there is a limited edition Griptilian on Benchmade's website. I think it's called the Camp Perry ed. or something like that.

I just like the way they look and how they feel; the perfect knife I think. I own three of 'em: the 551-1301, 551-101, and the plain old 551.

for a larger knife the full size ritter griptilian or the M4 version both are amazing and for a smaller option the 707 sequel I find to be much better then the regular mini grip

For me I went with a Mini Ritter grip. I liked the blade shape better and it has s30v over 154 cm. You could also go with a custom grip straight from benchmade with handle colors of your choice, blade shape and color etc.. Also get a choice of s30v, d2, 154 cm and n680.
I like the mini grip's handle over the full size because it fits my hand almost perfectly, it's a touch too small. Also the full grip doesn't have full liners and makes it feel cheap and flimsy, which they aren't of course, I just don't like that plastic feeling.

Out of those I have the mini-grip, mini-barrage, mini-presidio ultra and I've had the emissary.

The best for EDC out of those is the mini-grip, IMO.

The mini-barrage is too fat (in comparison) and the assist actually makes is less convenient. The mini-presidio is fine. I picked it over the mini-grip as my first non-bali benchmade, since I thought it looked nicer, but after using both I like the mini-grip more. I didn't like the emissary at all and it's more expensive as well.

I have a dozen Benchmade knives , but carry the Bone collector the most.

I know its not on your list, but I would check out the BM 940.It is lightweight at just 3oz you barely can feel it in your pocket, and it is slim which also makes it great for EDC compared to other blades. The reverse tanto blade is wicked, s30v steel, 3.4inch blade with nearly 1:1 handle to blade ratio (but doesn't feel like it) and built like a tank. That silly purple backspacer initially turned me off but has grown on me. Hope that helps and I didn't leave you with more questions than answers.

Good luck!

For EDC carry, I like to stay around a 3" blade and a fully ambi opener & lock, so BMs with AXIS locks and either thumb studs or a hole work well for me. The two I carry most often are a mini-Bone Collector for everyday work & utility carry and a 525 for dressier stuff on Sundays, funerals, weddings, etc. I also have a 585 that I really like and will sometimes carry for everyday stuff. They are easily capable of handling any normal cutting chores I run into. If I need a larger folder, I have a Rift. Beyond that size I move into fixed blades.

I've tried a 940 but I didn't like the overall length of the knife and the narrow width of the blade and handle. Wasn't comfortable for me to carry or use. I have a mini-Ritter that I like overall, but it's a bit short for a comfortable grip compared to the BC. Great blade shape and grind, though, and surprisingly tough for the way it looks and feels.

I also have a 300SN that I really like on days when I don't mind carrying a thicker knife. Haven't tried a Volli yet, but that's next on my BM list to acquire. I've heard good things about the knife from people who've actually carried and used it and I do like BM's AXIS-assist.

Given your choices I'd get the Griptilian, although I've never had one it seems to get the most constant praise in regards to utility and ergos.

Now personally my favorite BM for EDC is my original 730 Ares.

For EDC the Mini Grip is hard to beat. Light weight, doesn't take up a lot of space in pocket, good blade steels. It cuts stuff well.

Try one in a store before you buy it, I can see how it may not be for everyone. I love mine to death though, and it is a mean slicer with the high flat grind and thin steel stock

Also the thinness of the handle is a plus, with the nested steel liners, and the sculpted G10 is just beautiful

A mini-grip or a 707 Sequel if you like smaller knives with a blade length slightly less than 3" The mini-grip comes in many configurations, my personal preference is the Ritter. The 707 is very similar to the mini-grip in size, but is a little more expensive, and you get aluminum handles with G10 inlays. A very nice knife for EDC as many will attest.

Also you should look at the 940 or 943. New ones are considerably more expensive than a mini-grip or 707, but a completely different knife. You can find one on the used market for about the same price as a new Ritter mini-grip if your willing to wait. Longer blade and handle, very thin and extremely lightweight for it's size. I just recently picked up a 940 in trade and absolutely love it.

I haven't used anything other than the grip. But I love mine and have carried it exclusively since buying it. It will handle anything I throw at it, cutting stuff at work to picking morel mushrooms. It is my go to knife for everything. And the one I got has orange handles, so what's not to love there?

I will be in the minority here. but I am appreciating my new edc mini Barrage more every day. I have found the blade shape to be quite useful in general tasks and the AO has been handy. I don't get to wrapped up in weight or thickness, as it let's me know it's there in my pocket. I would agree however, that the other suggestions are probably better for most.
