Best blade length

After having a Voyager X2 for over a year now, I'm starting to find 6" can be a bit much sometimes. I also managed to find a pair of jeans with short pockets.

5.5" is sounds pretty good. Too bad Cold Steel doesn't make a 5.5" version of the Voyager, with the Triad Lock, all screw construction and a full flat ground distal tapered blade...

My knife needs to be long enough to reach the tip.

I have enough in each range to not have a length favorite. Today I carried a Spyderco S and a Benchmade Rukus. When carrying multiple blades camping/hunting/ for S and giggles I try to adhere to my own rule: the next size down knife should roughly fit in the blade of the larger knife. Slipjoints are allowed to remain closed. A good example was when I carried this:

So far I only have folders, I prefer a blade from 3.25" to 4". My Spyderco Military blade seems to be about the largest blade I can comfortably EDC and USE. I tend to be a sucker for a blade between 3.5 and 3.75 though, something similar to a Tryade blade or a 0200 blade.:D

I've never had the need for a large knive and usually find the bigger they are the worse they handle, their harder and heavier to carry, they take up more room, are harder to sharpen, and harder to control. Maybe I would change my mind if I got stuck in the middle of Alaska with nothing but my fixed blade and my underwear, but there is very little chance of that happening.

So.................

Folder: Max of 3.25 but I prefer 2.75 to 3.0 inches.

Fixed Blade: Max of 5.0 but I prefer around 4.5 inches.

Folder 3.5 - 5 inches depending on the knife.

Fixed: 4.5 - 7 inches depending on edc or hiking/camping use.
