Best Busse for hutning/camping

The current offering on the Busse Combat site is the HACK Bear Cub. From looks and dimensions alone it looks like it'd make a fine hunting knife.

It's on the small side, might only be a three finger knife for most guys.

Busse has their own forum on BF, you might want to try this question there also, you'll get more responses.

Although it's a tad smaller than you asked about, either an Active Duty or Boney Active Duty would work well, the BAD would be better as a dedicated game knife as it is thin. But it sounds like that is what you want. Also, the BA3 is very good.

If you're willing to try Swamp Rat, their sister company, there is more selection, but all on the secondary market. My favorites are the Bandicoot, Howling Rat (Gen 2) and the Bog Dog. The BD is right in your range, and it's an *excellent* field knife, it was made in both D2 and 52100, and the others in 52100. They call it SR101 due to their proprietary heat treat.

Of them all, I like the BAD, Bandicoot, and Bog Dog the best. Good luck!

Surprised no one has mentioned a Leaner Meaner Street or possibly a SAR 5 It is a little longer that the BAD but I think it would make a great camp game knife.

I need a good 4-5" blade for skinning game and doing camp chores. I don't need a chopper or a prybar or smth. I already have the small forest axe from grunfors....

I don't have time right now to go through all the responses but... I guess that if you are not looking for a chopper or a prybar... there is a whole lot of different brands that might suit you better than Busse.

If you absolutely WANT a Busse and skinning and camp chores are the actual excuse to buy it :D then ask in the Busse forum and let them enlighten you!

I am not bashing Busse at all. I wish I could get one myself. I am just saying that for skinning, food prep (slicing and dicing) and withling tent stakes... you will probably be better suited with something with thinner stock.

Hey Evo? How do you do that? Email along with your order or what? Can you send them back in for re profiling? How do you go about that?

Normally, I've called them up to place my orders (419-923-6471), and just specified what I wanted. If I'd ordered online, then if there was a box for special instructions, I'd use it. If not, I'd email or call about my order.

I imagine you could send them back for reprofiling, but you should call and ask.

Can you pm them here and get them to answer like Bark River does over on KF?

No one has mentioned the PBS....Pork Belly Skinner.

+1

Shouldn't need to preface this (defenders and all) but I am a Busse owner at .170 ...
However, there are far better choices out there in the same price range ($2-300 that is being discussed here) with better fit/finish for your stated purpose. Plus, most others will come with a sheath.
You are already bringing one axe...
Remember that it is blade geometry that will make the knife cut. :)

Good luck!

hollowdweller likely bought that BAD through the Company Store (Idaho), so it was already out of the hands of the Shop (Ohio). Still, I imagine simply calling the Shop would be the best way to inquire about an edge modification. Right now, they're all gone/headed to Knob Creek, so I'd wait till next week to place a call.

You mustn't forget the Safari Skinner. One of my favorite Swamp Rats.

Also, the Swamp Rat Howling Rat Little Mischief and Ratmandu (pictured below) might be worth a look:

Agreed that there are a LOT of good choices in this price range, some of them customs (Geno Denning comes to mind here, as do a number of regulars who post on this very subforum). However, the man asked about Busses...

And you won't find a better warranty than the Busse warranty. Shouldn't be an issue if you treat your knife with respect, but there it is anyway.

Guyon, I'm really interested in that safari skinner. Looks perfect. Where can I get that one?

Thank you all for your replies and feedback. :D

BTW can anyone explain what ganza is? (sorry for my ignorance regarding busse knives)

That one's been out of production a while now, so you'll just have to watch the secondary market. The Exchange and fleaBay mainly. You could put up a Wanted to Buy post in that subforum here at Bladeforums. It took me a while to find my Safari Skinner in D2, but I actually wound up with two of them at one point. Sold one of them later on though. There is also a coated version in SR-101, I believe.

A Ganza is just an Internet offering from Busse. Jerry will post a GO! at one of two forums during a designated window of time. First to email gets first choices and so on down the line. Ganzas put some folks off--those who think getting the knife they want is life or death. But IMO they're just a way to experience some excitement and fun around the knives. They drive up interest for Jerry and Co., and they give folks something to talk/think about for a few weeks.

Hollowdweller,

Have you tried asking for the edge you want?

Busse tends to put somewhat fat edges on most of their knife designs, because of the knife's intended scope of use. However, whenever I've asked, they've been willing to put exactly the edge I wanted onto a knife, straight from the factory.

If you know what kind of edges they normally come with, but you don't ask for what you want, when you want something different, and when they are happy to provide what you want, then they can hardly be blamed that the edges are not to your taste.

In my experience, they do try to please their customers, if you give them the chance.

'Struth ... the photographer has it right.

The Swamprat Ratmandu is my favourite knife and should handle most any task you throw at it !!!

There are too many choices. Which of these swamp rat's or scrap yard's is not oop: Ratmandu, Hairy Carry, rat hunter, sar. Also, is badger attack really suitable for skinning? I'm leaning towards the rat hunter if it's still available. If not, I'll probably get a BAD unless someone can talk me into getting a BATAC.
