Best Busse for hutning/camping

There are too many choices. Which of these swamp rat's or scrap yard's is not oop: Ratmandu, Hairy Carry, rat hunter, sar. Also, is badger attack really suitable for skinning? I'm leaning towards the rat hunter if it's still available. If not, I'll probably get a BAD unless someone can talk me into getting a BATAC.

The BAD will serve you well. INFI is far and away the best overall steel that I've ever used. IMO... the batac and SAR are just a bit too big for the fine work. Keep your eye out on the exchange and you may be able to score a pretty good deal on a BAD. Good luck this hunting season, be sure and post pics when you bag one.

None, a cheapo Old Hickory works better IMHO.

Gee... and to think I've been wasting my money all these years buying customs, Randalls, Busse's, etc... when all I had to do was just go buy the ultimate knife... an Old Hickory... :p

Some guys just don't like to "cheap-out" on their gear... quality is always worth the price.;):)

It's no secret that I love Busse knives. Or that I really can't lurk like Tuvold Snurlson.

Nonetheless, Old Hickory knives are pretty good knives in 1095 steel. Regardless of what I think about Ontario and the recent flap with RAT, I'll concede that Old Hickory knives will handle most camp jobs at a very affordable price point.

Still, Almadjian might have chose a better thread to tout Old Hickory knives. :p The question here was about Busses.

This stuff is killing me. Everything is out of production. I like the Safari skinner, the ratmandu and the rat hunter but they are all rpf. Man, I'll just get the BAD and that's it.

The Nuclear Meltdown SFNO is going to be up for grabs at Bussecombat.com soon today... I know it's not exactly a blade for delicate work, but if you ever need to field dress a Rhinoceros, that's the knife you'd want!

Welcome to the world of Busse. Jerry makes knives in batches, like it or not.

That said, there are more Busse knives available on the Exchange than I've ever seen. It is truly a buyer's market, and you can find just about anything you're looking for.

Comrade,

Hang in there Man - you'll find the right one ;)

I went through the same process you are going through a while back and decided on a BATAC - I am absolutely thrilled with it - best all around camp knife I have owned. (And I have owned a bunch of them from assorted manufacturers / and yes I do use it on a weekly basis)

Cuts well/Skins well/ batons well /prys well, and even chops well - it's perfect for an all around camp knife. -very comfortable with prolonged use (even more so than a Basic - which I had to experience to believe)
Check out the blade profile compared to the ADs or even the Meaners in comparison - that up sweep is perfect for skinning deer etc without risking cutting through the hide.

Someone mentioned that a lot of Busse need to be re-profiled to get the maximum cutting efficiency - this is true from my experience (have owned 3 so far)

It does take time to work it down - But - it is worth it & fun (at least to me).
Since I re-profiled it, it makes fuzz sticks / wood curls as well as my Sebenza (both of which have been re-profiled) - that is amazing!

The curls are almost transparent they are so thin - not kidding.
Just was using it last week on some oak - and it caught off a Firesteel.

Another awesome thing about that model is if you check out the handle -it is curved a little toward the end - when you can ad a 55o cord wrist lanyard it is the perfect width to get a strong grip for your index finger to your palm - and you will be amazed at how well it chops for it's size with that set up due to the overall weight and profile of the blade.

Check em out.

Thank you Barrabas for your thorough info on the BATAC. I will definitely consider it now. I was a bit skeptic about it's skinning abilities, but now that I have some first hand info I'll check it out. Reprofiling doesn't pose much of a problem either.

Thx

Just a reminder, this is the WS&S forum. If you're looking for a Busse answer, they have an entire forum dedicated to discussion of their blades. Since the question was about a specific knife for hunting/camping, it is alright but again it is probably better served in their forum. You'll get a lot of different manufacturer responses here so don't mind if the recommended blades aren't Busse.

well if your looking for a good skinning knife have you looked at the hairy carry from swamt rat? 154 CM and at a price point of only 150ish not bad. and if you truly want a busse, then id look at the leaner meaner street. longer blade and handle adn looks nicer to me. Just my suggestion. The ratmandu like pitdog said would make a killer camp knife.
