Best Camping Folding Knife (Boy Scouts)

I'll bet there are knives that are recommended by the Boy Scouts, right Scout?

Folders, single blade, besides a SAK for camp/Boy Scout Stuff... Case Sodbuster, Opinel #8-9, Ontario Rat 1, Cold Steel Voyager Medium, or Svord Peasant, would work well and would come in under your budget. Personally I'd want an Alox Farmer :D

Sir, you have good taste.

Thank you, nice clip mod! My farmer is with me every day. It's been in my pocket since it came out of the box. Never leave home without it!

Maybe just an Opinel?

Or a Buck 300?

The Buck Inertia is a fun assist to show off around the camp fire

You can't go wrong with a Kershaw Leek. (No Pic)

You could always browse the exchange here. Some excellent deals on used pieces.

Hi! If you have the folder/multitool already covered with a SAK, I also would suggest considering a small fixed blade for all those camp/fire activities which might require some sturdier tool, given the today rules allow it.

In my Scout time (many years back :)) Linder knives were rather popular. If you like their style, they are still available today in your price range (have a look e.g. at their scout knives product line). Different options of “good old classic steel” types :D to choose from, easy to sharpen/maintain in the fields, they also offer decent choices of handle materials and sheaths. Good knives to start practicing with. Good luck and buona strada!

+1 on the opinel and mora option. Buy a high carbon Opinel #8 and a mora. If you still have money left over add a mora carver or an opinel saw blade. Mora and Opinel are amazing knives for the price.

I too would recommend a small (3.5-5") fixed blade since you already have a solid performing folder. All your bases would be covered.
As far as sharpening, keep at. It takes time and practice. See if you can find an old junk knife to practice on. It doesn't happen overnight, however it is definitely fulfilling to be able to take a dull knife and turn it into a razor edge. It's also a good way to make a few bucks sharpening all the other scouts knives who have dull knives. Good luck with the search and your endeavors.

I have some great suggestions if you could take a fixed blade. That is the area I have most experience in.

Please tell me, any suggestions for a fixed blade now will help me when I want one. Thanks all for your help!

Thank you all for your replies, but I already have a Swiss army knife and am looking for a pocket knife with only a knife and not a multi tool. Thanks for the feedback!
I think you would be very happy with an Ontario Rat 1. 3.5 inch blade, Aus 8 steel, very utilitarian.

If you can scrounge up another $20, boker has a few really high quality fixed blades in their spring specials. I am impressed with the arbolito series, especially the buffalo soul series. Have a look at their site at the spring specials. All their other knives can be found cheaper, except the spring special, on other sites. Happy hunting.

Don't you want to represent though? Get that warm feeling seeing the Scout logo emblazoned on the knife saying there may be other knives but this one is all scout. Separate your own knife from the others which only a scout can properly carry?

Woot woot.

True, but the new Scout knives are crap (the classic scout knives). If you wanted to go this route, find a vintage Scout knife.

I don't know how far in the past qualifies as "vintage," but I had the Boy Scout Knife 25 years ago as a Scout, and it, too, was crap.

For general backpacking and wood use, I would recommend the Mora Companion as the ideal first fixed blade. I would also advise just putting a normal micro bevel on it and let nature take its course and ending up with a convexed blade. Forget the strict scandi grind stuff.

I carried a Buck 501 in scouts. The Squire. Pretty knife to look at and it sounds cool opening and closing. Locks open for safe use, it's thin and doesn't weigh much. I would consider the slightly larger Case Copperlock too, it's a sweet knife. If you don't mind a little more weight, the Buck 112 is a little workhorse and fits the hand just right when you need it most.

Fixed blade, I would lean toward the Case Hunter 365-5 SS. I've been using it a lot lately and man it just works, especially preparing food. Also, the new Buck Brahma 117 is so sweet and feels so great I just want to jump for joy. Both of these have stacked leather handles. Isn't stacked leather a must for a Boy Scout fixed blade? It was many years ago and for good reason.
