Best Camping Folding Knife (Boy Scouts)

Scouting has recognized many knives over the years and unofficially many knife makers have made knives marketed to scouts. Western used to make woodlore style fixed blades with the BSA logo. And of course the the standard for many years was the 4 (and 3 and 5) blade camper knives like those made by Ulster, Camillus, Imperial and many others.

Though the OP already made his choice, I'm still going to suggest he get an Opinel #8. I discovered them as a Scout leader and ended up wishing I'd had one as a Boy Scout. Went on an official Boy Scout campout that stated "No fixed blades" so I decided to buy an Opinel #8 in carbon steel. It ended up doing almost as good a job at a whittling project as my go-to scandi-grind fixed blades. I've since ended up recommending Opinels to the Scouts and parents, especially as some of the families have limited finances. The parents like the suggestion, but the Scouts would rather go for the cool factor over function.

His question was re a knife for Scouting and not Bladeforums.

My point was he wanted more than one knife, like most of us on Bladeforums. If each of us only wanted one knife, once we got it we would have no need to come here. It seemed like some could not understand why he wanted anything more than a SAK. I was just suggesting that most of us have one or more SAK's and still want something different from time to time. I know I did when I was a scout and still do. I never found the SAK handle to be comfortable for whittling or woodcarving at all. I liked it for the usefulness of the tools.

The OP is in all of one thread on BF. This one. A Scout is thrifty and with a SAK he's set. That's my point.

Good scout knives of my day late 80's.

Hi all! I am a boy scout and I want to get my very first knife. I will be using it on camping trips and such. I need the knife to have around a 3" long blade and under 50$. I have a smith 3 in 1 sharpener at home but I am not That good at sharpening. Please help me choose a knife because I am not sure what to pick. Thanks

Many people recommended a Victorinox swiss army knife. Later in the thread, Yodasko said he already has a SAK and doesn't want a multitool. I don't generally consider SAKs multi-tools although they often have some tools included in the package. So, he decided on a Cold Steel Voyager. Fine.

We don't really know what he wants to use it for. I suspect he just wants an expensive "cool knife" that he can take camping. That's fine too.

I believe in starting slowly with knives (same with firearms) at a young age and as experience accumulates, your requirements or wants likely change. He appears not to be the total novice one got the impression of in the opening post. I think the Cold Steel will serve him sufficiently well until he wants another knife.
