Sometimes you stumble upon great deals, the Primitive Bowie (Atlanta Cutlery not that garbage throwaway crap you see on Ebay) I found at ironically enough the Salvation Army one day several years back. Sitting in the counter it had no edge put on just yet and was priced at $20 with a 50% off sale on all merchandise so I got it for $10! The Sheath is nothing special however but the steel is strong as hell. I just thought it was funny because it was just sitting amongst some sliver ware and dishes and no one had picked up yet.

The Timber Rattler I also found at a local trade shop, I know you can find these for $20 online but I picked it up for $25 and not a penny more, already this was plenty sharp out of the box but once I'd taken it to Vulcan Knife works in Ballard, I had them both polished and sharpened including the clip or backcut as some refer to it, if any of you are local to the Ballard area, I HIGHLY recommend them, anyhow, what are your stories of the best knife you ever happened upon and had to have?

Best deal I've gotten was $9.95 for a piece of ATS-34 which I have since turned into a large knife ;)

More seriously though, I bought an Esee-5 off the exchange here for $95. Those retail for $150+ new, and aside from a few scuffs on the coating from the sheath, it was in like new condition. Shaved hair and showed no signs of owner sharpening.

I used to be a professional gear reviewer for several UK outdoor magazines, so I got LOADS of knives for free :)

(Why didn't I get more??!!)

Unlikely the best $for$ deal but still my favorite one. A 1 off Busse chopper that originally cost $1200, for $700 baby (the king of my collection taboot)

In the early 90's I bought out a guy selling Pacific Cutlery knives designed by Jody Samson...nearly 100 pieces give or take...I had to give $2K in cash...I still have one of each for my son.
Financially I'm to the good...just a tad.

I had two knives ordered from a custom maker. We had only nailed down the price on the more expensive of the two when they were finished. I ended up getting the second custom 3V knife with sheath for $75.

Benchmade fixed blade purdue 440c tanto for $18 from a location shop that closed downdown

I got a slightly used Koster bushcraft knife in O1 with with a nice leather sheath for $50.

Busse didnt charge me for 2-$200 blades once and also sent me a MUCH more expensive knife then the one I ordered at a different time.

I informed them though:D

Paid $40 for a set of Ran SS damascus kitchen knives, new in the leather presentation box at a pawn shop. The guy wws just putting them int the display case. I don't know if they missed a 0 on the price tag or what.

got a kershaw 1005 for 20.00 bucks at a pawn shop because the guy bet me it was made in the US. he had 100.00 on it.

Awesome. How come that never happens to me:confused:

I used to walk past Vulcan Knife works all the time. I never did make it inside though. A buddy of mine has a fab shop right down the street and I used to work over at Barnacle Point in the ship yard there. Glad to hear that Ballard has a good knife shop.

The best deal I ever got on a fixed blade was an Al Mar Fang II which I picked up in a trade (about $65 out of pocket)
And I sold some time later for $300. A good deal for me I think :)

A used and modified early Western Bowie with a theatre looking sheath (it has obviously pocket knife cutout designs and the names of the unit and owner from Vietnam on back) for free when my buddies and my Dad threw out the rest of the junk of one of his clients that were moving.

I got a ZT 0121 for $100 in new condition, but now I cant find the damn thing anywhere.

recently, a discontinued spanish Aitor Survival 18 from the seventies in near mint condition, still shiny as a mirror and only missing one screw from the handle, probably never used for 50$. These sell for triple or more that amount when they are found.
