I had the same dilemma and opted for the Sage 2. I am not disappointed, but if I were to do it again I'd probably get two: Sage 1 and a Dragonfly or Tenacious.
I'd say for harder use, probably the Paramilitary 2, SuperLeaf, or the like would be ideal for your use. The Manix 2 variations might work too, though the blade-to-handle ratio of all of these are not that great. In this category for work use, try the Gayle Bradley.
For EDC, I'd mostly consider either the Delica/Endura series and save a lot of cash, or go with the Caly 3.5 or Stretch. The Caly 3.5 packs a lot of blade in a handle only a little larger than the Caly 3. VG-10 is a near ideal EDC steel, easy to sharpen, takes a fine polished edge if you like, and is quite stainless. S30V or S35V work well too. I prefer ZDP-189, M4, S90V or M390 but that's mostly for bragging rights .
