Hi
I am looking for a smallish fanny pack for short hikes.
I dont want it to look big and nerdy but I dont want it to be too small. Do you know of a good one?

I use the Maxpedition Octa waist pack. I love the pack. I keep a survival tin, a surefire flashlight, my flint, a small survival blanket and a small poncho in it all times. I still have room for the XD45 if I decide to bring it with me.

I second the Proteus. I love mine and really like it's size and storage capacity.
Incidentally, I put an XD40 in mine. :D

I love fanny packs. I prefer the Maxpedition Sabrecat but I have a Kifaru Tailgunner on order.

I have a new Proteus I never used as well. Too small for me.

That's a whole lot of nothing to go on. You buy any kind of pack based on the gear you want to carry.
So what do you expect the pack to carry?

It isn't the 80s so you're just going to have to live with nerdy (nerdy is the PC description). Go with Maxpedition or one of the other tactical type bags if you feel the need to man it up (good luck).

Thanks for the reply guys.
I want something small and not ridged. Something comfortable.

I want something to put my wallet, keys, phone, a hand gun, a knife, a multi tool, and a pocket first aid kit.

I got one from Walmart made by Outdoor Products a few weeks ago.
I just bought the exact same one and like it. Great place to carry my camera, small binoculars, etc. They also had one a bit larger that held two water bottles for around eleven dollars. I thought the two bottles were overkill, but upon reflection figured one of them would be good waterproof storage for toilet paper and other stuff I want to keep dry. I'm going to pick one up next time I'm at Wal-Mart.

I prefer any of the Maxpedition packs, you won't go wrong with one of theirs. I have tried and used Mountainsmith packs and usually tear them in no time.

I use and like the Proteus. It carries nicely, holds more than you would think and is plenty big enough for your list above. The four compartments are good for organizing several medium to small items. It is not so good at carrying bigger, bulkier items, though.

It think the Octa would also be a good alternative. It's a little smaller than the Proteus. This style also wears better as a sling bag if you think you'll be carrying it that way much.

Same. I looked for a long time before I went with the Maxpedition Octa. It's small however it does what I need it to do. Plus it's made bulletproof.

I can't speak to Maxpedition but I can tell you my original Mountainsmith Lumbar Day back is 18 years old and is as solid as the day I bought it. Not sure how can "tear them in no time". They are quite well made.
