Best fanny pack

I got a EastSports fanny pack from Walmart 10 years ago. It's my EDC PSK.
I don't put a gun or knife in it, cause I wear them on my belt when hiking.
Plus I don't have CCW.

Just recently picked up a Kakadu Bum Bag, liking it so far.

I have a Maxpedition Proteous and am pretty happy with it.

It seems about the right size...I donno maybe if I had it to do over again i would go one size up, not to carry more, that would end up being heavier than i would want a waist pack to be, but just for a bit more wiggle room when rooting through the thing, or maybe for a slightly bigger secondary pocket, which is where i keep my first aid gear.

But overall mine carriers some first aid stuff, fire kit, heatsheats bivy and two person blanket, folding saw, small pry bar, mora clipper, flashlight, and a couple big handfulls of misc 'survival goodies' with a bit of room to spare.
The little clamshell pockets on the sides hold a LOT more than you would expect (The bivy and heatsheat take up one of them)

I also like that the strap is long enough that you can sling it over a shoulder if you want. Also it has a top carry handle for toting it short distances.

I find walking long distances with my Maxpedition Proteus kind of uncomfortable, but it's nice for organizing the essentials and keeping them toghether, so I keep it strapped to my pack or into the pack and take it out for wood gathering and other short walks around camp. If I was to walk a lot with it, I'd pay much attention not to over-burden it. It can get to be fairly heavy if you suff it mindlessly... Learned that the wrong way :)

It's for that very reason that I'm looking into getting some kind of detachable yoke to take some of the weight on my shoulders and put some storage on my chest for quick access.

I've had a Mountainsmith for a couple of years- it's been snowshoeing, bumming around Mt. Evans, to the top and back three times and have had no issues. Love Mountainsmith

My Maxped holds a candle. You must have some huge candles to haul around.

 holy crap that's funny
Yes it is, yes it is. LOL
This thread has me rethinking the fanny pack. I always passed on them because I didn't think they would be all that great to carry weight but my survival gear is about two pounds so that's not an issue anymore. One thing though, how are they for carrying a full nalgene? Water is on my list of 10 essentials.

Shotgun: My thoughts on fanny pack + water bottle

I carried my Proteus, a 10x4 bottle holder with a full goyot steel bottle for the short hike.
It wasn't horrible, but I didn't really like that much weight hanging on my waist.

I just tried and i couldn't fit my goyot into the Proteus.
There may or may not be enough internal volume, i'm not sure, i couldn't get it throug the opening.
So that would be something that's highly dependent on your exact pack and water bottle.

I know for me, If i'm going for a walk in the woods, i grab my fanny pack and my old plastic army surplus canteen and holder and slip that on my belt.
That seems to work pretty well for me.
Also i have a collapsable "Aqua Pouch" from survivalresources. So if i get in trouble but have find a water source I've got another liter of water storage.

Walmart sells a "fanny pack" that comes with two water bottles.
Picked one up to use for Disney trip that never happened.

If you can still find one...the Marmot Flathead. Has 2 Nalgene holders, several inside organizer pockets, outside "shovel" pocket, daisy chain, comfortably cinches close to back.

I used a large Bianchi Gunrunner "Fanny Pack" for just about twenty years now. Tough as nails! You can carry a pistola in it if you wish, if not, good place for a knife back there!

It's very, very roomy.

Lately, I wanted something that didn't scream, "I HAVE A HANDGUN IN THIS BLACK BAG!" So, on the advice of ROCK6, I obtained an EMDOM Recon Waist Bag/Pack. Very, very rugged little pack!

I still think im going to choose the Maxpedition Proteus. But what about the Sabercat then ? no one have consider a Maxpedition Sabercat ?

I am pretty sure i can fit 2 nalgenes (1 on each side pouch).. well i hope its doable. I will either choose

1) Proteus
2) Sabercat
3) ditch the fanny pack and get a mongo

I love maxpedition and looking for any maxpedition bag/pouch to expend my Vulture II .. or to create a small expedition kit (fanny pack or versipak). I could also strap the Proteus or a BARON Load-Out Duffel Bag under the Vulture II to expend the pack..
