Best/favorite stockman?

My favorite stockman is my Schrade Uncle Henry. It was my first knife, and 15 years later I still carry it. Walks and talks the same Today as it did the day I got it.

Wish I could find my first one, it got lost in one of several moves. Steven

Zip7,

Case is still making the 6347 3 7/8" round bolster stockman. I just purchased one, albeit with Tru-Sharp and not CV steel, from Shepherd Hills Cutlery back in December. If you go to their website and look under "Patterns" you'll find it listed on the same page as the Medium Stockman.

Thanks for all the great replies and suggestions (especially for those with pics). I've got lots of homework to do now, but I like the hunt! The pics of those Old Timers really make me still want one- guess I'll be keeping an eye on the 'bay and the exchange.

Thanks again!

I have a good many case Stockmans, and my favorite Case stockman isn't made anymore - the rounded bolster 47 pattern - 3 7/8" long.

That's my favorite too

I kind of collect that pattern in 1979 and older versions, and I will be the first to admit that the fit & finish is all over the place, but if you look hard you can find some from 1977 or 1978 - and I have more knives with excellent fit & finish from those years than any others. Particularly 1977. Every knife I have from that year is great.

If you are looking new and in stores I would stick with the Case yellow handle CVs. Probably a 3318, which is a little smaller but a great pattern.

The Eye Brand and Bulldogs are both OK, but both are blocky feeling.

The USA made Old Timers are solid knives, and I've rarely seen a bad one.

Moore Makers are hit and miss, but in stockman patterns I don't care for the main blade shape - the tip is swept back too far to me.

I've never been a Buck fan, but they are on par with the Old Timers - but stainless. I like Carbon.

Case still makes the 6347 in amber bone and stainless steel. The CV version was discontinued about 1990.

love my german eye stockman have packed it for years and will keep on packing it best knife ever

One of my favorites.
Greg

Aww Greg, you are right on with that stout little beauty. That would make the ultimate user. And likely the last Stockman I would ever need.. .. Well, at least for a while anyway.

Queen #26 small Stockman D2 blades in Jigged Black Cherry (delrin to us folk)
Use it contantly and dissapears in to my pocket.
Sharpens well, the D2 holds for ever, and only needs touching up.

Queen #9 Stockman D2 blades in Amber Stag bone, has real weight to it as a solid working knife.
And F&F is excellent.
The D2 blades needs rebeveling, but I was more than happy to invest the time to come to razor sharp.
The Amber Stag bone is almost translucent.

This is my favorite. Schrade 61OT. I have a couple of these now and use them every day. 4" long, good steel, delrin handle, and I really like the shape of the blade. A little work horse. Just bought this one and here is the picture.

By the way this in not my photo, the person who sold the knife to me took the picture. But it is my knife.

DANG, so many I would consider to be my favorites but the 61ot reminded me how much I like thoes too. I liked it so much I found an old one on ebay for $20 bucks and kept watching and a week later found a NOS 61ot main blade for $5 bucks. Had a custom guy from over in the schrade forum, Dale Vincent, do a number on it. Pics do it no justice its a beaut!! Dont know if its still a stockman with 1 blade but they are great knives.- Joel

Hey that is pretty cool gradall5200. I like that. The 61OT blade reminds me of a peanut on steroids

He told me the "new" Old Timers are made in China too . I really like the blade shapes and sizes on the older Old Timers. I would love carbon steel, but will accept good stainless, Delrin, or such, is fine for the scales
You should have no trouble finding an original USA-made 34OT Old Timer. It's probably their most common and popular model ever. The older ones will have carbon steel; the newer ones probably stainless.

Schrade 61OT.
Love it. As far as comfort, that's my favorite Old Timer. If I had an extra or two, I'd carry one!

Wow, very nice knife. Now I just need to buy one.

Gradall, that red knife you showed is like a hen's tooth RARE

A single bladed Stockman?? Looks like serpentine slimline trapper that's been working out, really nice knife thanks!

Just for clarification, the handle shape isn't what makes it a stockman but rather the blade configuration within the handle. In other words, the reworked knife that Gradall happily owns is a single blade serpentine pattern.

The premium stockman is a serpentine pattern that has the stockman blades, usually consisting of clip, sheepfoot and spey (or punch). (You'll see the same pattern used in a two blade configuration such as the Premium Jack which Case calls the "Texas Jack".)

Does that help?

Thanks for the clarification. Can a Stockman have more than 3 blades?
