Best ferro striker?

My experience is that Burncycle has got it right!!! Those carbide sharpeners (mine are swiss made) beat out about everything, especially if you're already carrying the carbide to keep a working edge on your machete. As mentioned elsewhere, the spine of most bushcraft knives are already dressed to do the job, and virtually any SAK saw blade will really shoot some sparks. But your personal experience may differ....

Good luck,

Doc :D

I just did some experimenting! I've always used a hacksaw blade, and always loved them. But I just tried my Krein Bushcraft and CR Skinner. The Bushcraft I had top "sharpen" the spine. He rounds the edges to make them comfortable.

So, I had some crazy sparks coming off my Krein! Using the very tip of the knife, holding the tip between my thumb and middle of my index finger, I can get some really good leverage on the ferro rod. The hacksaw blade gives when I try to really apply some pressure.

Just some thoughts.

I am surprised at the number of people using a swiss army knife. I find them to be one of the worst strikers to use.

I posted here not to long ago on using the blade of a little dollar store knife as a dedicated striker. Feels really good and shoots the sparks well.

The squared off spine of my knife, or a hacksaw, but the knife throws better sparks and is easier on my hands, as I don't always get it going first strike.

cz75b: What is Sandvik Coromant?

Sandvik Coromant is a tool to remove liquid gaskets from engine blocks etc. It's a very hard piece of special material, and is squared at the edges. It doesn't get dull at all.
Also the awl on my SAK works well, just like my FK F1 or a squared off piece of hacksaw.

I found out not to use the blade of a knife as it burrs easily.

I use the back of a folding saw,or my SAK hercules wood saw, much better and does not riun the knife's edge

the back of the mora's (740) isn't bad either! tried with the edge once as you see in some survival episodes (Ray Mears e.g.) the edge burrs and has to be fixed\honed :-(

any pics of hack saws? have no idea...

I use these little scrapers from Lowes. I just grind down the edge so its not as sharp but still square.
