Best first Bark River Knife?

Eagle Eye and JohhnyO hit it on the head: you simply can't go wrong with a Bark River. I think my most versatile is the mini skinner; what a great companion. Even though I carry that in a KSF pocket sheath (highly recommended) my mikro II in one of Spen's clip sheaths is great for dress up. I wear braces and clip it in about 4:30. One of the biggest little blades available.

I've noticed that, lately, the tusk has been calling to me in the night. So far, I have not be able to bring myself to drop the hammer. Anyone else notice a slight blip in the economy? Not a good time to be a Realtor.

Oh yeah, and as to a good place to buy... I've had excellent service with Knives Ship Free, but I just ordered my Canadian Special from DLT Trading... they're having a HELL of a sale on a lot of Barkies ATM.

Which one did you snag ? (handle)

What they had left was going pretty cheap.

I am very happy with my Bravo-1. It is a hefty blade, but I find it works well for an all-around for me. Scary sharp. After seeing StretchNM's Highland picture, I need one of them too.

I found knifesupply.com to have great prices and service. I emailed about availability and Shawn didn't have the one I wanted in stock. As soon as it became available he emailed me with a link. I had it 3 working days later.

I got the Blue Glow G-10. I had been wanting to check out that material, and check out the CS, so when the two combined with a great sale, I couldn't resist. :o

For the OP, I stand by my thinking that the Bravo1 might be too heavy, but I'll qualify that by saying that it also has one of the most comfortable handles of any knife I've held. I have medium sized hands.

Wow, they do have the best prices for bark river knives i've ever seen.

Bravo gets the publicity, but canadian special is the real deal

I have the bravo 1 and canadian special and love them both, but the CS gets the nod for versitility and comfort.

It doesn't really matter, you will have both before you know it, and many more. :D

Bro, it even has the brand new 2009 logo on it. That is one of the absolutely finest knives you can possibly own. It will flat out do it all.

Just recently got into Bark River Knives myself. Of the many that initially caught my interest, I went with a Fox River Magnum for my first, I also have a Bravo 2 among others. Both feel great in the hand, fit and finish is superb, and SO many handle choices.

As for buying, I have only used knives ship free and DLT trading so far, both have been absolutely excellent to deal with.

Convex sharpening is simple once you get a bit of practice, there is a great set of Sharpening Videos on the knives ship free site, as well as many more with a quick web search.

I think I can safely say you will not be disappointed with the purchase of a Bark River knife, regardless of which you choose as your first, and, as already stated, it won't be your last.

That Magnum is SMOKIN'!

I have a Black G-10 Bravo-2. It is a beast of a knife that cuts like a razor.

I'm hoping to give the Bravo 2 it's maiden workout this weekend.

Forecast is for rain:(

I've been reading reviews and looking at pics of Bark River knives for a long time and I want to finally get one as a light/medium utility user. I don't do chin-ups on my knives or chop concrete with them so I highly doubt I'll break it but I don't really want any of the small ones since I have plenty of big folders. I'm thinking I want about a 4" blade length and I want an A2 one just to try the steel. The ones I have been looking at are:

Bravo 1= I like it reminds me of my Beckers:thumbup:
Gameskeeper= very classic and classy looking
Huntsman= essentially a thinner gameskeeper
Fox River= This is the way I'm leaning I just like the look of it, would be most
different from my current crop of fixed blades

Scout= looks to me a lot like the Fox River

Just curious what you guys think?

Also where's a good place to buy and what about sharpening a totally convex grind, I've seen mention of leather and some green compound they make? All of my knives are conventional V-grind, and I use a sharpmaker on them.

You've answered your own question. :p
Bravo and Gameskeeper lose performence because the stock is much ticker than you need.
Good for survival (bravo I) and joint breaking when skinning (gameskeeper)
Bark River = Convex grind, so don't take the hollow ground Scout.
Remains the most versatile and personal favourite of Mike Steward: Fox River

The Canadian Special is Mikes favorite knife.

He switches between them, but you're right.
The Fox river was his favourite until he made the Canadian Special.
I must admit at that time frame I stopped collecting Barkies (had more than enough ) and also didn't checked their forum anymore.
