best fixed blade for the bush

i love these threads.... busse, busse, busse... mora, mora, mora...

the best one is the one you have with you of course, which ever that may be... a $500 knife or a $15 knife...

It all depends on what you mean by a knife for the bush...What are you going tobe doing cleaning a trout and whittling trap parts? hacking down a tree? What other tools if any do you take with you??

I purchased a Sog Field Pup made with Aus8 steel. The handle is one of the most comfortbale I have and I find the recurve very efficient. The sheath I got was not so good, usable but not great. In the states I think you can pick these up on the cheap side.

A few years ago I was in Toledo, Spain and visited a knife shop there. I picked up 2 Muela knives at a reasonable price. One has a 4" blade and the other a 6" blade. I found the 4" blade is more useful to me during my time in the woods.

Pictures are at this link.

Yeah! Muela does some good looking knives... I am from Spain and my first fixed blade (besides diving knives I mean) was a Muela Cazorla with brass guard and stag handle... I still have it around. I like more other blade shapes though so it doesn't get used much. If I was to buy another Muela... it will probably be the Muela Kodiak (440 flat grind 4mm thick and 100mm long) You can have it in three different flavours!
Cocobolo
Stag
Wood stag combo

It is like the cheap Spanish brother of the F1! BTW why do you say that Bark Rivers are well over $200? Fox Rivers, Northern Stars, Huntsman and alike are under $150... you can even find some Fox Rivers for as little as $102!!
Mikel

PD: I agree with you in some ways... almost anytime someone asks about a budget friendly knife someone jumps in and recomends Busse. I wish I had the money for one!

The common features I want are:
Carbon Steel
Micarta Scales

Then I rule out specialty knifes like fillet knives are such.
Then I rule out cheaply built knives (note I said cheaply built, not cheap... two different things).
So what am I left with?

Exactly 135,439 quality knives with the only thing being different is personal preference.

If you're asking me MY preference, then it's my Koster Nessmuk. It's my favorite knife in that size range hands down.

If I went with a production knife in that range, it'd probably be the Fallkniven that others have suggested or a Ranger. I personally don't like production knives, and so I pay a premium to get custom made ones, like my Koster Nessmuk.

So my words of advise are this: Get some cheap production knives and figure out what you like. Then if you want to get a fancier version of the knife you like, go for it. I'd suggest a Mora to try Scandi blades, a Kabar to try tactical blades, etc... Look for them used and you can probably get them on the cheap (except the Mora, because it's cheap as all get out to begin with).

ok I got 3 choices.... LoL if $ is a issue than leave out the Busse or Busse by-product names scrapyard/ swamprat and you can skip Bark river as well. these two swamps chopweiler & swamp warden w/sheath I gave $325 for the set-up. the Bark river Bravo1& PSK w/ sheath ran me $265 or you can do my EDC RC3 cost me $100 shipped and I carry it daily !

micarta is great, its true, but what do you guys think about G10 for a handle?

What's interesting is I don't have a blade in the 4-5" range.
Closest would be a Jarvenpaa puukko at 3 3/4".

Most likely I'm going to pick up an RC-4 when they come out.

Step One, purchace proper size O1 tool steel,
Step Two, Shape Knife with Bench Grinder and Nicholson Black Diamond Bastard File
Step Three, Sand out Imperfections and run up the grit ladder to atleast 400, Drill Holes for Lanyard and Handle Pins.
Step Four, Use grill and hairdryer Rig to properly heat to criticle and quench in oil
Step Five,Draw Temper at 400º- 425º F in your home oven for atleast 2 hours, then let cool and do it again.
Step Six, Re-sand back up to 400 grit atleast
Step Seven, Etch overnight in 50/50 mix of White Vinigar and Pure Lemon Juice
Step Eight, Make and Shape Handle, out of you choice of Stabilized Material
Step Nine, Pin the Handle on, engrave makers mark
Step Ten, Rinse-Lather-Repeat. Now you have a knife you can truly call your own use,and abuse. not to mention being able to pass down to your kid who'll inturn pass it down,

There are an awful lot great blades out there in that price range. One of my favorites is the Lakota Hawk, beautiful finish, thick and strong, nice geometry....
