Hi everyone! I am a boy scout and I am looking for a good fixed blade for camping. I don't want it to go over 9'' or $30. I did some research and found the mora companion with a separate fire steel and the light my fire mora fireknife, but any other suggestions would really help. Please help me with this hard choice. Thanks!

How about the Glock Field Knife, they are about your price range.

I think the blade length is 6.5" but the overall length is a little longer than 9".

Actually, your research leading to the light my fire Mora was well done; it is an excellent choice.

Another option could be something from Hultafors.

Please read through this thread:

I would suggest picking up a secondary fire steel/ferro rod. They are rather inexpensive and there are a variety of companies that make them and work to differing degrees. Some throw globs of molten meyal, some throw heavy sparks.
I personally am more fond of the "globular" type of result. I find that the longer burn of the material tends to ignite your gathered material faster or at least more efficiently.

Good luck.

i wouldnt look to beat the mora , as far as doing the job of a knife i dont know of any at any price that would do it better and i have spent 50 years looking

Can't go wrong with a Mora. The fire steel is a neat idea, but in 50+ -- OK, 60+ -- years of Scouting, hiking and camping, I've never had to use one. Matches or a lighter work much better.

If you have your heart set on a fixed blade instead of a folder like a Vic Farmer, then a Mora (or "Mora-style" like Huiltafors) is a well-respected choice in that price range.

Actually, I don't know if there is another choice for a good fixed blade in that range. Particularly for camping.

The Mora companion was my first 'good' camp knife. I did everything with that knife, fires, batoning, feather sticks, and 100 other things. It's a great knife, and the ferro rod works very well.

A Mora would be a good choice. A Buck Bucklite Max large will also work and is very inexpensive.

Thanks for all your suggestions! So which Mora should I get, I have looked and they have a lot of them? Thanks!

I would get the Companion. Best for the price.

Perhaps a Schrade fixed blade might work too. Haven't looked at pricing in a while, so not sure if that would fit into your budget.

Mora companion is the way to go. They are awesome and if for some reason you lose it or break it just get another one and you would still have lunch money left on $30."" Budget

I think the Mora is a great option as far as off the shelf goes, but have you considered getting an Ontario old hickory knife a making a fun project out of it ? The Steel is excellent and they cost under 20$ . all that's really needed depending on which you get is to contour the handle, sharpen it, and make a sheath ( the sheath could probably get you a leather craft badge , and the handle maybe even a wood working badge )

Smart thinking.

Plenty of folks have used comparable going back to pre-industrialization periods for camp, wood, daily usage, game processing and general survival.

I used a 5.5" Mora Allround as my main fixed blade for over a years' worth of camping, I'd recommend it to anybody who can maintain a carbon steel blade. The handle is fantastically grippy and has more grip options than most of their other knives.

Another vote for the Mora. While the light my fire model is cool, a few lighters with back-ups sealed from moisture would do you as well if not better. I have a few of the Mora HD Companions and they are hard to beat in that price range ... great value.

Have to agree... I carry a Bic or two usually. And now I got one of these waterproof containers with some windproof/waterproof wax covered matches.

The matches work well, they're cheap, and pretty much act as their own tinder. Beginning to like them a lot.

Had a Companion, until I got a Mora Pro S from KingMC. I like the Pro S much better. It's the go-to blade in my pack now.

Mora is a great choice.
Carbon steel will rust tho,be sure to dry it off after use.
Or as mentioned,a Schrade will be a good starter fixed blade too.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I know own this sounds like a weird question but which companion should I get? There are like ten to choose from. I was thinking the fireknife because it had the knife and fire starter for only $20, but from what all you guys are saying it sounds like the companion is better. Thanks!
