Best Fixed Blade

Mora companion is an excellent knife for the money. Even though I have better knives now, it still gets a fair amount of carry. I think I have 3 of them I like them so much. They don't chop well at all, but they can do everything else. It's a perfect pairing with a fiskers X7 hatchet. $40 total will get you both.

Mora Companion stainless steel is my backpacking knife. Definitely recommend it! Given a few to friends and all have enjoyed them as well

If I were you, I'd get a companion and a craftline robust through Baryonyx Knife, and have him do the Special Grade option.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I know own this sounds like a weird question but which companion should I get? There are like ten to choose from. I was thinking the fireknife because it had the knife and fire starter for only $20, but from what all you guys are saying it sounds like the companion is better. Thanks!

Get the companion heavy duty.
You won't regret it.
If you get the carbon blade it is more prone to rust so you gotta give it more TLC. Or get stainless and no worries.

Nothing wrong with the Companion, but the Light My Fire knife is a neat knife and visible when you set it down in the woods if you get it in red or orange. The Victorinox Farmer mentioned above is outstanding, as is the Victorinox Hiker. They both will give you a nice blade and a saw that can be very useful camping.

Moras are great if you want to keep it cheap but for $30 I would definitely recommend getting a condor bushlore. GREAT knife for $30!

Mora Companion Heavy Duty.

Are you in the USA? Thought BSA no longer allowed fixed blades.

If you can save another $10-$15, you can go for the Mora Bushcraft Black. It has a 90 degree angle spine which would be perfect with a fire steel. I've had mine for 3 years and this summer it went on all of my weekend camping trips. I used it to make impromptu tent stakes after my buddy forgot the ones that came with the tent, I used it to split a few small logs for kindling, then I used it for the other cutting tasks, like opening boxes.

Thank you all for your suggestions. How would you sharpen the Mora's Scandi Grind? Is there a special way of doing it? Thanks!

The Condor Bushlore is a nice fixed blade with a nice leather sheath. The other Condor that I was surprised how much I like it is the Two Rivers Skinner in stainless.

Wow, how did I forget about Condor?
I would take a good look at them, Baryonyx might even have some in his marked down section for a steal.

So I should the mora companion and a separate fire starter. I was wondering how the mora light my fire fireknife stacks up against the mora companion? Thanks

Hi everyone! I am a boy scout and I am looking for a good fixed blade for camping. I don't want it to go over 9'' or $30. I did some research and found the mora companion with a separate fire steel and the light my fire mora fireknife, but any other suggestions would really help. Please help me with this hard choice. Thanks!

Tough as nails and under $30. CS GI Tanto. Best Bang for the buck anywhere.

Please read the thread in its entirety, it seems your question might have been addressed already (partially) by myself.

Another option could be something from Hultafors.

I would suggest picking up a secondary fire steel/ferro rod. They are rather inexpensive and there are a variety of companies that make them and work to differing degrees. Some throw globs of molten meyal, some throw heavy sparks.
I personally am more fond of the "globular" type of result. I find that the longer burn of the material tends to ignite your gathered material faster or at least more efficiently.

Good luck.
