In your opinion what knife is the best "flipper" style knife, I will even let assisted openers into the discussion but they have to have the index-finger flipper.

I am asking because I am looking for some new ideas of knives to buy and have become quite fond of the flipper on my JYD 2. What do you think?

Burger knives EXK and LEXK.

I like my G10 Tyrade a lot.

I had a G10 Tyrade, should have never traded it, might try to get another.

Althought I do not own one (yet), I would say the Hinderer X18

I have been trying hard to not look at the Hinderer because I know that if i start researching and looking at it hard, I will end up getting one and I do not need to spend that much on a knife.

I had the boker exskelibur for a while, and I know it is probably nothing like the real thing but I just couldn't get used to that action, it felt very awkward to me.

Groove. RJ's flippers are some of the best I've ever used.
JYD II / Pro JYD. Tim nailed this entire setup. Excellent flipper.
Volt. Well, it is an RJ model. ;). New steel and all that Ti. mmmmm, like butter smooth.

I don't own many, But the Kershaw OD1 is great. It was even mistaken for a auto once at work. Then when I opened it again real slow to show it wasn't the guy said " O your tricking me" What a tool.

I hear ya Garrett. I've decided to sell some of my duplicate knives and see if I can at least stay under $100 out of pocket. When they pop up, they don't last long though. Every knife enthusiast should have one high end knife.

One word and word only RAM. The Kershaw Ram is the smoothest flipper you will ever open. The RAM opens faster than a lot of autos. Try it you will love it. It also close faster than alot of flippers open.

Thanks to Slade gt40. Try this with another flipper

When I think flippers the first name that comes to mind is RJ Martin. Hands down the best and smoothest flippers I own. After that comes my Galyean Pro Series Large and Small. After that comes my Todd Begg CIG. Then My Southard AWT. My Yunas are not slouches either as they kick open pretty fast with no wrist motion. Kershaw's flippers are all pretty smooth and I've never had a problem flipping them open. Maybe it's just technique, but I find all of Kershaw's flippers quite easy to open. Some are smoother than others. The RAM, Groove, and Volt are the first that come to mind that are smooth and easy to flip. All of Kershaw's AO's flip very nicely, but they're supposed to with the AO.

Pretty much any of the Kershaw flippers are great. I personally own a Chive, a Shallot, a Leek, an Oso Sweet, and two RAMs (the original and the newer one with the slightly better steel) and love 'em all.

I've played with an OD-1, an OD-2, a Whirlwind, a Cyclone, a Blur, and a Needs Work, and had no problems with any of them either. And I've heard great things about the Groove and the Volt (I WILL get one, I swear).

Don't forget the Zing. I have two and I love them. Great little knives.

Also the Ener-G and Ener-G II. I have the Ener-G II. Really a nice, well made knife.

I haven't really gotten a chance to try out a Zing yet, though where I work carries the orange version (bright-handled "outdoor" knives just aren't my thing). Haven't gotten a hand on a Ener-G or Ener-G II either. From my experience, it's safe to assume any Kershaw flipper is a good flipper. You may have issues with blade size or shape, with handle material or blade steel, but Kershaw (and ZT by extension) have mastered the flipper opening system.

+1 on the RAM- my favorite, plus the "trigger" is well designed so it doesn't stick out as far as most.

The Buck Vantage is amazingly smooth- especially for a knife at that price.

I would say RJ Martin makes the best flipper, I have 3 of them and they fire stupid fast. Todd Begg's knives are great to. Rick Hinderer makes a nice flipper as well, though I prefer the 3'' for the flippers. I would rank them in that order as well.

I'm basing this on unassisted flippers.

Darrel Ralph is the master of the flipper.
