Best folding BEATER!

That's a nice gesture. I sure as hell know my dad would appreciate one.

Thanks for the gift idea :D

haha..my dad is an old time hunter the buck 110 just blatantly stands out to me as a knife he'd like. Now I just need to find him a decent multi-tool to go with it so he stays out of trouble with the buck..lol. I guess knives just look too much like a screwdriver to him..

Get the Kabar Mule. It is really good. I wrote a review a while ago....Sog Trident is good too but I don't really think of it as a beater (too thin maybe, I'm not really sure)The glock field knife also looks like a good beater for a fixed blade.

The Spyderco D’Allara Drop Point is the one that I would suggest for a rugged folding camp/hunting/survival knife under $100. The D’Allara has a very strong Ball Lock a hand filing 3D grip, a wire clip, and a versatile drop point blade made of premium VG10 steel.

That spyderco D’Allara is definitely a more rugged design than i've seen in a spyderco and all the ones i've seen look like they're built pretty well.

Yeah, I was interested in the Mule : 1, because it's a ka bar and 2, because it really looks tough. I had the opportunity to check one out at a shop near my house and it seems pretty sturdy, but I didn't have a lot of other folder comparisons. They were missing several of the ones I put on my secondary list. Ka Bar advertises it as the solution to not having a fixed blade, which is pretty big talk..but advertising means little to nothing.

They had a griptilian, but it wasn't the mel pardue version..i don't know how much difference there is. I've had people i've asked recommend the pardue (and ritter) over the standard grip. ..and they had the mule and the ka bar dozier folder (which I bought a couple days ago and i'm looking for a bigger blade to supplement it), but were missing the voyager, cara cara, and junk yard dog.

I did have a chance to look at a CS Ultimate Hunter and I'll tell you what..that lock felt ROCK solid. It was sharp, comfortable, and seemed like a heck of a knife.

I bought my delica serrated AUS-8 blade 8 years ago for 35 bucks and it still holds and edge and does the job so you know my recommendation :)

Yeah, sorry I overlooked your post..there were several people posting.

What kind of use has your delica seen? It's a 3 incher probably, right?

Mel Pardue designed the griptilian, the only other designer is Doug Ritter with his blade variation. If it isn't a Rittergrip, it's a Pardue.

3"

I use it daily at work, to open boxes, cut straps, etc. I use it out in the yard, I use it camping. It has been my EDC for almost 8 years now. Still holds an edge still going strong.

So you pretty much use it for everything, then, huh? Did you have a specific reason for getting the delica? Was it just the blade size that you liked for edc?

I just ordered a Kershaw "Needs Work". Price: $31.25. http://www.newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=7368 I intend to use it as a beater.

Kershaw has recently come out with some excellent, inexpensive folders like the "Junkyard Dogs I & II". I have high hopes for the "Needs Work" and will report back after using it awhile.

Okay, that'd be great. Hope it works out well for ya. STR recommended the Needs work and kda suggested the junk yard dog II. They're both pretty sturdy looking. Do you own the JYD2 or have had a chance to use one?

Tremonti:- I have used and sharpened my JYD-II for a couple months now and I couldn't be more impressed with its performance. It does everything I ask of it from delicate tasks all the way up to heavy exertion.

The flipper combined with the heavy (and wide:thumbup: ) blade are a joy to use; The ultimate in convenience without the need of assisted opening. And, in my medium/large hand, the grips are some of the most pleasingly ergonomic I have ever held.

I have a minor issue with the ugly (to my eye) markings on the G10 grips and a major objection to the gaudy looks of the perfectly functional clip. The clip screams "BIG KNIFE" to the sheeple staring, bug eyed at your pocket.

The JYD-II is a little on the large and heavy side as folders go. Functionally, it is a dream for the price.

Awesome... I like me a big honkin' knife...lol I have larger than average hands myself and ergonomically find it hard to use some knives. ..and also from a macho-man perspective, although I'm cheap..when I buy a knife I want a KNIFE.. I don't mind a little extra weight at all.

So, with price in mind would you suggest the JYD over: BM Griptilian, Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara, Ka Bar Mule, Cold Steel Voyager/Ultimate Hunter? I'll probably end up with all of these or some variation at some point. I'm just looking for a good and large folder to get started with. It's probably gonna see it's fair share of use and abuse. The BM will probably only be used rarely while some of the cheaper ones i'm not going to be scared to use and/or possibly have them break.

What is the Rc on the Junkyard dogs?? I looked on the Kershaw website, and they don't say. If it is at the upper end of its recommended hardness I would say give it a shot. Otherwise, go with a Byrd, the 8Cr13MoV at 61Rc will give you better aggression for the long haul. The 13C26 will in fact grant you a better push cutting edge, but will not keep an aggressive slicing edge as long. Then again, for average everyday stuff, you will never know the difference, so get what you like the best.;) ;)

Tremonti:---In the order you listed.

JYD-II - Good blade steel. Excellent handle shape and material. Unique, snappy opening. Alot of knife for what you pay.

BM Griptilian - Good blade steel. Axis lock (some swear by it and some don't). Good design. Good price. Nice knife.

Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara - Cheap as dirt. Very serviceable. Some people think anything more costly is overkill. Buy several and beat 'em to death.

Ka-Bar Mule - Nice folder. Traditional design. Price is modest. Unexciting.

Cold Steel Voyager/Ultimate hunter - They have their loyal fans. Personally, I would not spring considering value/cost

In the end, you pays your money and you takes your chances. 'Caveat Emptor' and so on. Also, I agree with beckerhead; Get what appeals to you.

I have the small JYD framelock, M2 Rittergrip, G10 Cara Cara combo edge, and had a Voyager, as previously mentioned.

I reprofiled the JYD, handle, blade, and clip. Too much steel in the swedge that nerfed point penetration, too pointy in the handle and clip. Also had to file the framelock a little so it would pass spinewhacks. Steel sharpens up very nicely, but the finish left it prone to rust spots while on a 3 day field exercise. I really miss studs or a hole when trying to open the knife. The extra size and G10 may be the ticket, though.

Rittergrip was a limited edition, different blade shape and steel. Handle is a little wide, but feels really good in the hand. Axis lock is my fave. Never did much care for BM's ATS34/154CM, had it on a few of their knives and it didn't feel great on sharpening stones. New ones are hollow ground, don't know how they perform.

The Cara is a good value, imo. Pocket clip could be a little better, but good grip and the blade sharpens like a razor. I cut out some steel in front of the opening hole and it waves open on a pocket draw. Solid lockup and useful choil.

The Cold Steel AUS8 voyager was a real good work knife in my estimation. Strong lock and the steel held up well while resharpening easily. I really want an Ultimate Hunter for a beater, especially after looking at the pics shootist16 posted on the general board. Thickest blade stock of the choices, I believe.
