Best folding BEATER!

So you pretty much use it for everything, then, huh? Did you have a specific reason for getting the delica? Was it just the blade size that you liked for edc?

I wanted something small, that was serrated that I could pretty much use as an EDC for everything

Here is a picture of it with one of my ccw rigs. I fI lose it I wil buy another in a heartbeat. Cheap, AUS-8 steel, and has served me well for many years

I'm surprised noone's mentioned the Boker Trance, though I suppose it may be a bit too slender for a "beater" - particularly when compared against the JYD's, D'Allara, etc.

The Needs Work looks like a nice hunk of a folder. Also check out the Kershaw Lahar.

personally, my Delica 3 VG-10 has held up very well. So has my secondary knife, the Boker Desert Subcom F (CE)

I heard a rumor that Bear Grylls used the Voyager for a little while on his TV show on the discovery channel. I'm not sure whether that's actually true or not.

He's never used a Voyager. He used various knives in Season 1, including a Gerber Gator; the Gator has been used in every ep of Season 2 except the Everglades ep.

I've owned a couple of Voyagers and whatever else one can criticize about Cold Steel (and I've done it myself, a lot) the Voyager series seems to have remained pretty solid. I'm pretty sure they're all made in Japan, which is good, and the new steel (VG-1?) is decent for a beater knife.

I have the small JYD framelock, M2 Rittergrip, G10 Cara Cara combo edge, and had a Voyager, as previously mentioned.

I reprofiled the JYD, handle, blade, and clip. Too much steel in the swedge that nerfed point penetration, too pointy in the handle and clip. Also had to file the framelock a little so it would pass spinewhacks. Steel sharpens up very nicely, but the finish left it prone to rust spots while on a 3 day field exercise.

Rittergrip was a limited edition, different blade shape and steel. Handle is a little wide, but feels really good in the hand.

The Cara is a good value, imo.

The Cold Steel AUS8 voyager was a real good work knife in my estimation. Strong lock and the steel held up well while resharpening easily.

I've probably read Doug Ritter's website equipped.org/com or whatever it is..about 5 times clear through. Great information, not only on tools, but how to use them and lots of other tid-bits of survival information as well. I can't help but amass some respect for the guy and also have faith that his version of the griptilian would be excellent. I don't know if it would justify the extra money involved though. The griptilian is quite a nice knife already, I can't imagine what improvements he had made to make it more "survival worthy." Not to say he didn't, but just saying he was working with an excellent platform already.

I'm probably going to either buy a spyderco (most likely the cara cara or endura because of the blade size [maybe even that d'allara]) or one of the more hefty knives first. As to which one, I guess it really depends on what mood i'm in when I go to buy. I'm swinging in the direction of either the master hunter/jyd-2.

Thanks for the comparison, you've been a great source of information.

I'm glad to hear that spyderco has served you well. That definitely speaks of the craftsmanship of the company. I'm probably either going to get a plain/combo blade myself.

I really don't know much about bokers..or many other manufacturers to be completely honest. I'll be sure to check those out though, thanks a lot.

Like I said, I heard that somewhere (yahoo answers or something) where someone said that on a knife subject.

Have you owned many cold steel blades? I'm really trying to compare the voyager and ultimate hunter. They're the two I'm the most interested in. They both seem like a hefty knife. I had a chance to play around with an ultimate hunter and it was nice and solid. I figure the voyager might be somewhat similar in that regard, but I have no way to really compare that myself.

The only other cold steel blades i was ever thinking about buying was the recon 1 and maybe the fixed survival knife (srk or something like that). I'm not yet to the fixed knife purchasing stage yet, but honestly the other knives I've been looking at are comparative, if not, superior to the recon. So, I doubt I'll ever buy it.

..and i've heard that the quality of several CS blades has really gone downhill since camillus went out of business.

This is just an aside, but there is also a possibility that I'm going to join the air force. So, having something that I can rely on in the service would be a plus.

For a great 'Made in USA' value, you can't beat, as others have suggested, the Buck 110 lockback or the 119 for a fixed blade, both available for less than $36 at Wally World. Can't beat that for value and availability. You can get a hi-tech S30V 110 by ordering the $65 'Alaskan Guide 110' from Cabela's - or a real looker version of the 119 in the 119BR for $75 from several sources - with the phenolic handle replaced by rosewood and the handguard and pommel in brass rather than aluminum.
