Best folding knife choice for the outdoors?

another I've been eyeing.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed to get one of these for Father's day or my b-day this year. Just wish it had a thumbstud.

I do not think that you can find a better value in an American made knife than the D-2 Queens, good work, very good prices.

Agreed. Queens are a great value for the money, and their D-2 is impressive. I'm also a big fan of the offerings from Great Eastern Cutlery, but they are often a little more expensive than Queen.

For me, carrying a folder in the woods is for food prep, whittling, minor cutting tasks, and usually accompanies a fixed blade. This is a common pair that I carry in the woods. The Queen Jack, with a spear and pen blade combo, is pretty versatile:

Another thread back from the dead, but to update for myself, since I've gone through some changes in 6 years:

For a folding knife, I can get by with anything well enough. My preferred carry options nowadays:

Custom alox SAK with tools I want
Alox Farmer
SAK Hiker
Opinel #8

Honorable mention: Spyderco Ladybug/FFG Delica/Para2, Case Swayback Jack, Leatherman Micra/StyleCS, Vic PE OHT

I want to try a Svord Peasant knife one of these days.

Most often, I'm out with a small, up to 4", fixed blade + SAK.

I agree with the Farmer and Opinel. The SAK is pretty much a must for me, honestly. I've always had a Climber, and eventhough it has more tools, the saw in the Farmer is just something I wouldn't want to miss anymore. Depending on the trip, I will decide between the two though. For dayhikes and picknicks, I'd rather take the Climber (it opens bottles of wine :D).
Opinels on the other hand are inexpensive and great cutters. I often have one or two of 'em with me as well, and I tend to limit their role to food knives because of their slicing capabilities. I also prefer to take Opis over more expensive knives such as Spydercos. They might perform better, but a Delica for example is rather flimsy and I would hate it if I broke it. Couldn't care less if I broke an Opinel.

However, I tend to leave the Opinels at home lately and just take a small fixed blade with me, such as a BK14. It works well for me and it won't snap.
I will keep pairing that small fixed blade up with a SAK, that's obligatory for me :-)

Opinel, SAK champ, Extrema Ratio M1A1 or small sebenza. All are very useful, can't decide if i I like the extrema ratio or sebenza best.
