The Queen traditional folders in D2 seem to be a well-kept secret (which is unfortunate for Queen....)

I wasn't real familiar with the company, but I "needed" a new pocketknife and wanted to try some D2. I went with Queen based largely on them being in the AG Russell catalog and being American made. I'm very pleased with this knife and I'm thinking about getting the smaller lockback as well.

I currently carry a Kabar Mule in the pocket of my Spec Ops sheath. Mostly just to have something in there. I have been meaning to replace it with a SAK though, which would be much more useful and practical.

The Mule is the most worthless knife I own. :o :grumpy:

Now here is a thread that I missed when I was out in the woods!

I love the new spyderco police 3. I took it on a folder only trip and it did great. Of course the emerson mod is awesome as well. The Griptillians can't be beat, but I've also had my eye on a few other designs such as this shing:

another I've been eyeing.

Good thread! I've actually seldom carried a real folder in the woods. Complementing my fixed blade, my tiny SAK Classic adds scissors, file, and tweezers.

Back in the 90's before I was a knife knut, I did the AT with a SAK Tinker. It was pretty good, but I only ever used the main blade. I don't run into too many screws or bottles in the woods. (I did occasionally find a can in some shelters, and thru-hikers will eat anything. :D )

If I were to carry a single folder in the woods for a shorter trip today, either a day or overnight trip, it would probably be my Vic Spirit for working on skis/bikes/reels/etc.

As far as a knife only, I'd probably choose my Endura or maybe even the SAK Tinker. I used to like the Gerber Gator a lot because the rubbery handles were good with/wo gloves and wasn't bad in cold weather.

EDIT: Joezilla, what IS that thing? Looks great!

A comfortable Victorinox SAK with a saw and awl in addition to the main blade works well for me.

This would certainly be a useful and practical choice. In my 20 years of SAK use, I've found the awl is one of the most useful tools. I sure wish it locked (wanna see the scars?)

For forest/desert use, I strongly prefer boring ol' RED handles on my SAK, with a simple orange paracord lanyard. Ask me why.

I know the saw is one of the most popular SAK tools, but I've found them to be too short to be useful and frustrating to sharpen. If I were to want a saw, I would opt for a Sven saw or a lightweight folding saw -- I've given several Buck and Gerber folding saws as gifts for vehicle/ATV kits.

I put the one on my Farmer all the way THROUGH the web of my left hand a couple years back!

I was jabbing holes in a can of cat food to set a coon trap. I had been catfishing for two days, and had just gotten back to camp and cleaned the fish. The can slipped in my slimy hand and I missed the top on a down stroke, and put it through from the top through to my palm. Bled like an SOB. I drove myself over an hour to the closest hospital. I know the Doc was like WTF. Two days of sweat, catfish bait, and fish guts make for a smelly patient. Hand is fine. There wasn't anything to stitch up, just a hole. They cleaned it out, gave my a couple of shots and some meds. The next day I was back fishing, with a latex glove on with duct tape around the wrist. It was sore for a week or so.

That's crazy. Thanks for the story! Glad your had recovered so well.

Things like that always seem to happen so fast. Back OT: do you wish you had stabbed your hand with a different knife? :D;)

No, I really like the Farmer. It has everything for camping and such. I use the can and bottle openers a good bit. The little saw is good for notching or cutting sticks around an inch thick. I'll either pair it up with a Leatherman Skeletool (for the locking blade and pliers), or I'll carry a Leatherman Charge teamed up with a Grip, Millie or Sebenza. Got to have some pliers most the time, so I carry the TTi a lot.

I usually have two with me. I sak knife , and a carbon steel trapper. Sometimes I replace the trapper with a large stockman or lockback but I always have the sak.

I do not think that you can find a better value in an American made knife than the D-2 Queens, good work, very good prices.

I started my camping days as a kid with the Buck 110 but finally figured if I needed a blade that size, it should be fixed. I replaced for carry it with a Buck 501 which was one of the most used knives I ever owned and I ended up with a second one of those. Love them to death. Thanks to these forums though I learned about the Griptilian line from Benchmade and now prefer the Mini-Grip 556 as a pocket folder. Love the clip and speedy opening with the flick of my wrist.

While I don't generally rely on a folder as my primary knife in the woods, force of habit has led me to keep one clipped in my right pocket as it would be around town or the shop. My preferred folders for days in the woods include the Benchmade Ritter Grip (RSK Mk1) and the Spyderco Military. I have sometimes been known to carry a Case Medium Stockman in CV. Another folding model that is always on my person or in my bag is the Vic Hiker. All have served me well and are great additions to my lineup.
